Today people are all well educated in the importance of physical exercise. We know that is we live sedentary lifestyles, our muscles will grow weaker and lead to degenerative diseases later in life. What isn’t stressed as much, however, is the fact that our brain needs just as much exercise, or else it will follow the same path. As a muscle, the brain needs to be worked in order to grow, strengthen, and be healthy. For the brain, mental activity is its exercise, and there are many different ways it can be exercised. Problem solving, word puzzles, creativity, studying, and critical thinking puzzles are all great ways to work your brain. The benefits one can gain from a well-exercise brain are incredible. Most importantly, a brain that is used regularly used and pushed is much less likely to develop a disease such as Alzheimer’s later in life. Other long-term benefits include increased memory capacity, faster reasoning skills, and the ability to handle more complicated functions. Short-term benefits include overall increased mental capacity and sharper problem-solving skills.
It may surprise you to learn that there are actually things out there in everyday life that will weaken your brain and hinder its many functions. Fortunately though, these little things can be, to an extent, controlled, and it is extremely important to make sure that you try to cut down on them to keep your brain from slipping into a routine and mundane state. When a person gets stressed, that stress can cut down and work against the brain’s natural ability to function, impeding your ability to think rationally. Everybody knows that stress puts a strain on your body, and your brain is no exception. If you are exposed to a lot of stressful situations throughout the day, it’s very important that you make sure to seek out as much time as possible to relax and de-stress. A life that also lacks any sort of spontaneity or challenge is also extremely harmful for your brain. The brain is designed to adapt, reason, and learn, and it absolutely loves to be challenged. – If you’re not using your brain to its full capacity, it inevitably will degenerate, which can lead to extremely harmful diseases in the long run.
How, then, can you exercise your brain conveniently and effectively? Fortunately there are any number of ways which you can give your brain a great workout and experience higher mental clarity. The trick is to exercise all parts of the brain – not simply one. Word searches and crossword puzzles, for example, are wonderful for working a certain part of the brain, but if they are all you do, the rest is not being challenged and will suffer. Because of this, it is best to have a constantly changing routine of exercises that will test your brain in many different areas. Paper activities are nice, but there are now several computer-based programs that are designed to puzzle and challenge your brain. These are ideal, because they feature many different varieties of puzzles and problems which can work every area of your brain. These are becoming increasingly popular, and video game titles are being produced which are based on these concepts. Video games that involve strategy, thought, planning, and decision making can also do a good job of stimulating certain reasoning and problem-solving areas of the brain. The bottom line is to constantly give your brain new challenges – if you do a certain form of mental exercise enough for it to be routine, you aren’t getting much benefit.
When exercising your brain, keep in mind that variety is best. Always try to avoid routine as much as you can, in your exercise and in your daily life. Your brain is capable of remaining active and “young” for a very long time, but this is only possible with appropriate exercise, like any other muscle. Find activities and challenges that you enjoy, and avoid ones that are too hard for you to complete – you want them to be challenging, but not so hard as to be frustrating. You want to avoid those high stress levels, and provide a good working environment for your brain.
