Help for Agoraphobia Sufferers - What is Best?

Posted: Jun 10, 2008 | Comments: 3 | Views: 381 | Bookmark and Share

Agoraphobia is not a "fear of open spaces" as it is often interpreted from the Latin meaning but it is an anxiety disorder that is classified as agoraphobia because the fear is linked with situations that are out of the sufferers control and gives them no place to escape leading to them often holing up on a "Safe space" like their home; thus the misconception they fear open spaces or markets. Luckily there is help for agoraphobia sufferers that can give them ways to handle their fear.

We must however qualify that statement by saying there are three different kinds of help but only one that makes a real difference. The first method is medication. There are quite a few drugs that help with anxiety and agoraphobia by changing the way the body reacts chemically to feelings of fear controlling adrenaline release and other reactions that can lead to full blown panic attacks that cripple agoraphobics. While this sounds good and can help people with this disorder cope better it is a short term solution and does nothing when the drugs are not being taken this is not help but a crutch!

The second approach is a little better and involves psychological therapy. Trained professionals can offer help for agoraphobics by probing to find the reasons behind the fear and can offer ways to help with this. While this can help with your agoraphobia and have good results there is a third way which can be better for a number of reasons.

The third, and probably the hardest way is also the best for one reason that applies to agoraphobics in particular. If YOU can control your fear of not having control of situations then this overcomes not only your agoraphobia but gives you the knowledge that is was YOU that overcame your fears and not the drugs nor anyone else but yourself that has the power to control your own life which is lasting help for agoraphobia sufferers.

I cant see how a book can get rid of something so dramatic. In my opinion the only way to go outside is either A: become an alcoholic or B: become a xanex junky. I mean seriously, people with agoraphobia like me has no money, has useless medcaid that doesnt pay for nothing. There\'s nothing to be done about this illness. Iv read books over and over about agoraphobia and I still cannot get over why I cant go outside and mingle and be apart of the world without drinking or taking pills. Its impossible unless your rich. I know my negativity is my down fall, but I see no light at the end of the tunnel. Sometimes I think all these books is just a way to blow smoke up our butts to make us get over it. America needs to DO something about the healthcare. More and more people are becoming disabled because the government wont help us. We need to let all these old governors force to retire and bring in some NEW GENERATION!!! this isnt 1925, its 2008. Lets cure these illnessness so americans like me can work again.

You are right. I am right there with you. I can't do crap anymore without beer. Unless of course I want to be I complete "fight or flight" the entire time. I mean not just a panic attack, but when I am in the field at work every day I try, and I am comletely in fear every moment about everything. Its horrible. I don't know how I am going to make it thru. Sometimes I feel like just throwing in the towel. And/or just hiding in my house from now on...its BS they can put someone on the moon but can't figure out why when I am at home that I am all of a sudden happy as a lark. Wtf this sucks

I think a statement like \\\'they can put a man on the moon but ..\\\' is misleading. There are even bigger problems than Agoraphobia that could also be dealt with if massive amounts of research and money was put into it also.

There are also plenty of other mental related problems while rooted in brain chemistry can be adjusted by cognitive training as they have discovered that we can retrain many parts of our brain.

It may be harsh but the government is not here to nurture us at every point and be a nanny state. It is there to help us and keep us safe and support us as a people but you can never expect the government to fix all of your problems as if you are the only priority.

I do not mean to offend but if there is a chance you can fix something yourself you should take it!
