How You Can Treat Teenage Depression Permanently

One of the most difficult times in anyone’s life is the time that they are a teenager. The pressures from peers, school, parents and society can make it almost too much to bear. At least this is the misconception that many people have about teenage depression. The honest truth is that while the teenage years are a trying time, the majority of teens handle the pressures placed on them fairly well. Yes there is rebellion, and for some even a gothic period… that is not what teenage depression is.

Teenage depression can completely destroy a teen’s personality. The destruction is so severe that is shatters every essence of who that teens is. They can be overcome by a sense of sadness, despair and anger. Right now it is hard to say whether or not there are more and more teens suffering from depression or if it is just that we as a society are more aware of it. Whichever the case may be, we as a society need to recognize teen depression and encourage teens to seek help. The sad fact is that of all the teens that are depressed, a small percentage (20%) gets help. Teen depression is completely treatable and they don’t have to be put on prescription medications to get better.

To help teens get help you need to know what to look for. Here are the most common signs of teen depression:
• Hopelessness and sadness
• Hostility
• Anger, irritability
• Frequent crying or tearfulness
• Withdrawal from friends and family
• A drastic change in sleeping and eating habits
• Agitation
• Restlessness
• Fatigue
• Feelings of worthlessness
• Loss or lack of enthusiasm
• Thoughts of suicide and/or death
• Problems/inability to concentrate

If these symptoms are present and they go untreated the teens condition can worsen. To help encourage your teen to get help let them know that there are a number of natural and effective treatments available to them. They don’t have to take a pill and jeopardize their future due to the long term side effects of many anti-depressants.

Natural treatment options for teens are very similar to those that are available to adults. Psychotherapy is effective because it allows the teens a safe haven to talk about the feelings they are experiencing and why they think they are feeling that way without being judged or ridiculed.

Teens have also found Cognitive behavioral therapy to be effective. This therapy is a combination of cognitive therapy and behavior therapy. What it does is helps teens change any negative thought patterns or behavior patterns they have so that they can break free of depression.

There is also interpersonal therapy, which is a short term therapy that focuses on helping teens develop healthier relationships at school and at home as well as with themselves. Naturally, just as with adults, self help techniques can help teens. Actually teens have found greater success with self help techniques, not because they are more geared towards teens, but because teens find it easier to try new things. They are more open to what is being presented to them.

The goal is to find the natural treatment option for teen depression that is going to work best for your teen. There is no point in signing them up for 15 Cognitive behavioral sessions if that is not what the teen is going to follow. Find the treatment that suits your teen and help them break free of depression for life.
