Meditation seems to be gaining ground even in the mainstream today, but what is it exactly? Simply put, mediation is a way of withdrawing ones mind and senses from external stimuli overload and focusing inward. The results are claimed to range anywhere from stress release to enlightenment. As with any technique, there are some dos and don’ts. The following are some meditation tips that can get you going.
1. It is often recommended to find a quite, clean and pleasant space to meditate in. For some, it will be a favorite spot outside in nature. For others it may be there bedroom, glowing in candlelight. The emphasis is not so much on where as to the feeling of comfort and quiet that the space provides you.
2. Another meditation tip is sitting or lying comfortably. Traditionally meditation is
performed on the floor in a sitting posture. If you find this uncomfortable however you can sit in a chair or even lie down. The important thing is that you are in a comfortable state that allows you to focus more on a point of concentration within yourself rather than your body.
3. “Finding your center” is a meditation tip that asks you to focus on a point within yourself – either your mental center or your heart center. The point is to withdraw your thoughts from whatever is going on around you.
4. Another meditation tip is to “watch your thoughts”. Don’t beat yourself up if your mind wanders. Rather, simply watch your thoughts in a detached fashion, allowing them to come and go, flow, if you will. Remember that they are only thoughts and that they do not represent the real you.
These are just a sample of beginning meditation tips to get you started.
