Prevalence of Agoraphobia

It's estimated that the prevalence of agoraphobia in the United States alone is approximately 5%. This could be higher because some people don't seek help, or have not been diagnosed.

About a third of people with panic disorder go on to develop agoraphobia. These statistics about agoraphobia are quite scary. It's more common than people think. Yet, the layperson has no clue what agoraphobia is.

At any given time in the United States, over 3 million people in their late teens and well into their fifties have agoraphobia. Twice as many women are afflicted by agoraphobia.

The Importance Of Treatment

Though the condition is treatable, it does require a lot of hard work, dedication and discipline. The work required is also scary. It can be done gradually or quickly.

It's scary because to get well, recover and live freely and happily once again, you must face fear in the eye. It eventually does get better, but you must remain motivated.

This is why agoraphobia can last for years and perhaps even a lifetime. Sometimes, after some good work and progress, a person may go through a bad spell. They may go back to their 'old ways' and give up.

This is why it can drag on. That's why it's so important to get treatment, help and guidance for this condition. Once you can overcome the fear of the panic attacks, which is the real problem, then you can be free of its hold on you.

Recovering From Agoraphobia

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and medication is not only effective, it will help to give you much-needed relief to make great progress. It changes your thoughts and helps you to overcome your fears.

There are many other ways to help you rid yourself of this. 2 programs of note are The Linden Method and the Panic Away programs. Both programs were created by ex-sufferers and know what it takes to deal with this.

Both programs have helped thousands of people. It can help you too. Nothing is a magic pill. It will require major input from you, even if you see a doctor and take medication.

The lifetime prevalence of agoraphobia in the United States alone is thought to be around 2.5% to 6.5%. Many of these people will think they can never be cured. Not so. Perseverance and motivation play the biggest roles in recovery. It can be done.
