Shall not Die Eternally

Notes on John 11:26

In English in the NIV version it is translated as "will never die." (John 11:26) In the Spanish RV60 version it is "No morirá eternamente" or in English, "will not die eternally." Young's Literal version says, "shall not die -- to the age," and Wycliffe’s translation says, "shall not die without end."

I think that "Shall not die eternally" perhaps may get across the idea in a better way that it is the condition of eternal death that is escaped. To me that is especially significant when physical death takes place. This death is a temporary one, which is part of the point Jesus is getting across. The wicked (the unsaved, unbelievers) also will have a temporary physical death, but they will be raised to suffer eternal death in Hell. The redeemed will be raised to eternal life with Jesus in the glory He is preparing now for them.

The more you understand and really believe this, it changes your whole perspective on life and death. You begin to long, not for death, but for the incredible glory that is coming. They say that death and taxes cannot be avoided. You must be ready for death. Jesus has made the only way to be ready. Through Him you will not die eternally, only temporarily. Even then you are with Him in Heaven until He restores your body.  This changes the character of death so that you actually see it as not so bad; it may be unpleasant, but wonderfully transforming.

A Blind Doctor?

By: Thomas Greenslade | 04/11/2008 | Psychology
Even the most brilliant or practical of men make many grave errors because they are in spiritual darkness. They cannot see what is right in front of them. They make fundamental errors and go in completely the wrong direction because they are in darkness. Few people are really helped by their psychological or spiritual counsel. They may be helped just a little, just enough to keep them trusting, and be misled, and even be destroyed because the person they trusted was blind.

The Dead Man’s Odor

By: Thomas Greenslade | 03/11/2008 | Mental Health
This perspective, this victorious power over death is what Jesus is demonstrating when He calls for the stone to be rolled away. He confronts death at the point that it is at its worst, and there, for all to see, He conquers it. That changes how I see my brother’s death – and my death.

"doubting Thomas"

By: Thomas Greenslade | 31/10/2008 | Motivational
Thomas was the most resistant to believing that Jesus was alive. He said he wanted the proof of seeing and touching. For that we have tagged him with the name, "Doubting Thomas." He was the sobriquet Missouri has on its license plate: "Show-Me State". Hard to convince? But then when Jesus granted him those proofs he was the first to bow before him and say "My Lord and my God."
