Taking Care of yourself - Depression Can be Beaten!

These days our modern lives cause us to always be rushing around. We don't have a lot of time for ourselves and we often forget to look after ourselves properly. It seems like our lives are filled with things to do. We all have busy busy lives today in the modern world, and when we're at home we rarely seem to relax.

We have so many more things to fill our lives with now. But it is important sometimes to slow down and take time to relax and to listen to what your body is telling you.

As mentioned above our modern lives seem to be filled with so many choices, so many decisions and so many responsibilities. It sometimes seems to be all work, work and more work. We seem to spend more time on the telephone or on the computer and we have real problems switching off.

Cause of depression

One of the major causes of depression is stress. Stress is increasing these days and with good reason. As our lives become ever more active and ever more busy it is even more important then ever to learn how to deal with stress. If you're not careful and if you don't look after yourself properly it is easy to become very stressed, very tired and one of the results of this can be depression.

Not taking care of yourself makes stress worse. Stress is never a problem on its own but your reaction to stress is what makes you ill. In order to cope with stress as well as you can you need to be healthy and you need to takecare of yourself.

Not taking care of yourself can lead to stress and depression. In the same way, not taking care of yourself is a symptom of depression.

Symptom of depression

If you suffer from depression chances are that you feel tired. One of the reasons why you may feel tired is that you're not looking after yourself properly.

Depression affects your motivation in such a way that it is sometimes impossible to look after yourself properly. You just can't be bothered.

Responsibilities

Life is filled with many many responsibilities, sometimes they seem overwhelming. If you are suffering from stress it's even more difficult to cope. If your responsibilities start to get on top of you, you may start to neglect yourself. This is dangerous because you can become very tired and your stress can lead to depression. Of course, in a similar way depression will also make it harder for you to keep up with your responsibilities. You will just feel like giving up.

Why you need to take care of yourself

Here are a few reasons why it's so important:

**If you are recovering from depression you need as much energy as you can get. Lack of energy is the worst possible obstruction to your recovery.

**Exercise been proven to make you feel better and make you feel happier. Looking after yourself means getting enough exercise and fresh air.

**Taking care of yourself means not neglecting what you need and what your body needs. If you do neglect what you need and do not look after yourself your depression and stress will grow.

**Taking good care of yourself will enable you to get stronger and cope better with your responsibilities. You will feel less tired and less stressed.

Problem of depression

If you feel depressed, chances are that you'll find it even difficult to get up and do the smallest things for yourself. Looking after yourself becomes harder because you have no motivation whatsoever. It doesn't matter what others tell you, you just can't be bothered to do anything for yourself. This is a problem that can just get worse and worse.

So if you are depressed and not taking care of yourself properly what can you do to improve the situation?

Here a few suggestions:

**Take a shower. This will immediately make you feel better, both physically and mentally, because you will see it as a sign that you have given yourself priority again.

**Get a new hairstyle.

**Listen to some inspiring and relaxing music. Your brain relaxes quickly when you listen to such music and your mood will lift rapidly also.

**Go outside for a walk. The fresh air and exercise will do you a lot of good and you'll feel better immediately.

**If you have a pet, spend some time with it. Animals are so therapeutic.

**Schedule time for yourself, to do what you want to do.

Finally, one of the most important things that you need when you are depressed is sleep. A good night's rest will ease your stress and depression immediately.
