Things You Should Know Before Taking Depression Medication

With so many options today, it’s hard to know which depression medication you should take. A few options you should look at as well as alternative treatments that may work are therapy, prescription drugs, and herbal remedies.

Sometimes, our first instinct when there is a problem is to self diagnose and medicate. With depression, there could be any number of underlying factors and you want to check into each before starting a treatment plan. Sometimes it’s as simple as an unresolved stress or conflict that conversation can cure.

Therapists are trained to help you relieve emotional problems and learn to deal with them without the use of medications. If there has been a recent traumatic event such as the loss of a loved one or a divorce, you may want to consider grief counseling.

If therapy doesn’t work, you may have a physical problem. Sometimes, hormonal imbalances or thyroid problems can contribute to mood disorders. Most of these can be treated with medication for the specific problem, eliminating the need for depression medication.

Sometimes, no matter how much we want to deny it, there is an actual problem that cannot be cured without anti depression medication. Chemical imbalances in the brain, genetic predisposition, traumatic childhood events, or just a lack of close personal interaction and relationships can make it necessary to consider depression medication. If this is the case, you have several options.

Pharmaceutical drugs have been shown to effectively treat depression symptoms. If, after trying other treatments and methods, you still have problems, your doctor may prescribe an anti depression medication. These drugs help to alter the chemical imbalances in your brain, helping you to produce the neurotransmitters that are vital to happiness and well being. The problem with these drugs is that sometimes people experience very unpleasant side effects and feelings from taking these drugs. For those people, herbal remedies may work better.

If you find that you cannot stomach the thought of taking a prescription depression medication, there are herbal supplements that have been proven to effectively treat and minimize the symptoms of depression. St. John’s Wort is one of the most effective herbal remedies. You can either grow it in your garden and use it to make tea, or you can take a supplemental pill a few times a day.

Herbal treatments have a lower chance of nasty side effects but can interact with your other medications so you should be careful. Consult an herbalist or your doctor before taking anything for your depression.

Nobody wants to feel down all the time. Treating your depression now before it gets out of control is your best bet. You’ll be happier longer, and will be able to lead a more fulfilling life.
