Understanding Emetophobia

I wanted to take the time to help you with understanding emetophobia. This is probably a condition that you've never heard of until someone you know is diagnosed with it. It is the irrational fear of vomiting. Most people don't think it's that bad because is it really bad to be afraid of vomiting? No one enjoys it or wants it to happen, but you need to focus on the fact that this is irrational and it takes over a person's life because there is a surprisingly high amount of things that can bring on that fear. I'm going to talk to you about understanding emetophobia.

Life is scary for an emetophobia sufferer because there is a lot of ways to get sick. A restaurant is scary because the kitchen could be dirty, the food could be old, the chef could be sick, the waiter could have coughed on your food or someone in the restaurant could have germs. The same is true for a lot of public places. A sufferer ends up closing off from the world because they need to be in control of all these variables, so they don't end up getting sick.

Now that we understand emetophobia, we can focus on the most important part; the desire to control variables. Controlling everything in your life, when you possibly can't do that is a form of anxiety. You can't close off your life because you don't know if someone on the street is sick. Anxiety treatment is all about teaching a sufferer that it's okay not to control these things and you can't let that control your life.
