Is an MLM or Network Marketing Business the Right Choice for Me?
Author: James Guffey | Posted: 28-04-2008 | Comments: 0 | Views: 4 | Rating: (50) (?)
Have you read the news? The economy is going downhill fast. Sure, many don't want to tell you this grim truth, but we already feel it. How much did it cost to fill up your car today? Tomorrow? How much were your groceries this week? Can you still plan your summer vacation? How about the value of the dollar, that which used to be one of the strongest in the world? I know that the last time I went to France it cost me a fortune!
After the big housing boom we just had, many took the equity from their home and used it for improvements, toys, vacations, or cars. Now, after they took that available equity out, they find themselves in a house that is now worth less than what they owe! Further, if you bought a house with the ever glorious ARM loan, you're feeling it. Many have already lost their homes to foreclosure and many more are in the beginning stages.
So, today more than ever people need an extra source of income. They may even need to replace their current income due to a pending job loss. Many now ask what is their best option? Multi-Level Marketing companies are out in force more than ever now, and for some it's a great choice. For many others however, it's a choice that's destined for failure. So how do you know if it's a good choice? Have you considered all the aspects of an MLM? Below I will outline some of them for you to consider as you take this big step.
First and foremost, Network Marketers represent a company that provides a product or service. In so doing, to join their organization you must enroll to receive the product or service. This is rarely free, and if you're already in a money crunch, this is something you must consider when approached. This first point is neither positive nor negative when considering an MLM, it is simply a fact. On the one hand, if money is tight this is difficult to accommodate. On the other hand, it means that once in the MLM you will generally earn commissions off the people you enroll.
Second, Multi-Level Marketing and Network Marketing is just that - Marketing. Do you need a degree? Of course not. Will the lack of a degree or experience affect you? Definitely. Most of the time when you join one of these companies, you will be told that you need to make a list of at least 100 of your friends/family/co-workers/acquaintances. Some people have no problem approaching these people to tell about their new business opportunity. Many others don't like the idea. So if you don't, what then? There are many options:
-Purchase Leads
-Cold Call Prospects
-Advertise in Classifieds
-Advertise in Google Ad-Words, Yahoo, MSN, etc
-Pay a marketing company to send people to your site
-Learn how to bring people to you - More on this below
Next, in many cases you will be required to continue to receive the products or services you initially signed up for. If you're successful in your marketing to either your contact list or the other methods provided, then you will not be concerned with this expense. If however you are like many, this will be an expense you are not willing to continue paying and will cancel your enrollment and thus close shop. This is very important to think about UP FRONT so you don't lose the money you invested for no reason.
Another item to consider is the product or service the MLM sells. Is it an item that will be well received by your contacts or people in general? For example, if the product is something people already have or buy, but is more expensive for some reason, they probably won't be interested. If however you are selling the same product and it is cheaper and more effective, then you will not have a problem selling it. That's terribly over simplified, but it outlines the point.
Lastly, you need to consider the compensation plan associated to the MLM/Network Marketing company. Many are the same, and some are different. The basic principle is implementing a system that is duplicatable so that you will enroll people as your sponsor enrolled you. This way, you would need to sponsor as many people as there are legs within any organization, and show them how to do the same. Thus it MULTIplies and MULTIplies, hence MULTI-Level Marketing. So back to the compensation plan, how do you get paid? Well, you are paid a percentage on the sales of those below you. What to consider is how much. Generally, each level pays a different amount, more for the higher levels and less for the lower. What happens if those in your first level prove the statistics true and fail? You may have lost a level of pay. Some companies offer dynamic compression, such that the level below the now dead level, move up and you are paid on it instead. This is a plus! Also, you may not be paid right away. It may take months for your compensation plan to kick in. This will make your monthly purchase more difficult. Some won't mind, and many will. These are all things you must consider.
If after you've considered this, you've decided to pursue a Network Marketing Company, you've made a great choice. If you've decided not to, you've made a great choice. Simply put, it's not for everyone. And those who decide against it are wise to do so as they are more than likely destined for failure. This is not a hit on their character, just a proven statistic.
For those who will pursue it, the following suggestions are in order:
-Learn how to attract customers to you. The days of buying leads are over
-Register your own domain name; don't rely on your companies mirrored sites
-Consider selling the product over selling the opportunity. Product customers are more loyal and longer lasting than business opportunity seekers
-Be smart with the money you invest in your business. It's very easy to spend far more than you make in advertising. Learn how to advertise more effectively, even if that requires spending money on information about doing so.
Thats just a few suggestions. Many a dollar is made on teaching you more. There are also many free resources. In everything you do within your MLM, run it like a business. Understand how much you spend to make a dollar. Try to keep it under a dollar!!! Network Marketing can provide a great income if you do it right, it's something business icons such as Donald Trump and Robert Kiyosaki endorse, and there must be a reason for it.
With that, I wish you the best of luck, whichever decision you have made!
-More about getting leads to come to you - There are a multitude of companies that claim to show you how to generate your own leads and even be paid to do so. Two words - be careful. There is no such thing as any company out there who wants to help you solely to help you - they too want to make money. Much research has shown me that you can do what they claim, but much money will be spent if you go through the entire "training processes" these companies sell. So, just take heed when you are presented with something that's too good to be true. My links below will look like that too, but I assure you I've paid nothing more than $40 and it's already working. Is this a plug - slightly. Just be sure you are cautious and don't believe EVERYTHING you hear/read. Again - Good Luck!
