This is one of the most powerful concepts in the world of behavior, yet so many of us don’t appreciate or understand it’s potential. The bottom line is simply this, words have powerful meaning, "what you believe is true." I don’t care if it’s positive or negative, right or wrong, good or bad, if you believe it to be true, then in your world, it’s true.
So many of us don’t realize that what we believe about ourselves, actually plays out in regard to how we live our lives. It’s not a coincidence that our behavior and actions follow what we believe to be true. If you believe you can, you probably will. On the other hand, if you believe you can’t, you probably won’t. You create your own reality based on your self-image.
The self-talk that you share with yourself on a daily basis, plays a major role in who you are and what you do with your life. It dictates whether you’re successful, happy, an optimist or a pessimist in regard to how you view the world. How you interpret your past experiences in life, colors your world in the present. Your self-image has everything to do with how you see the world and how you function in it. It’s like a patent that you design for your life.
Often, what you believe about yourself isn’t even true, because it’s based on a false self-image. Many of us accept that our self-image is set in stone, "that’s it, that’s who I am, there’s no changing me." When you were a child you made decisions not knowing you had options. One of those decisions was how you developed your self-image. You weren’t aware that external circumstances, people and events, had the power to influence your self-image.
There’s a silver lining in this story, which is, if you created your self-image once, you can do it again. You just need to learn how and believe that you can.
All human behavior is habitual, so if you’ve been telling yourself that you’re stupid or ugly and you’ve been reinforcing that thought for years, you can bet that you believe it’s true. Think about this for a minute, as young adults, maybe even as children, we have approximately 60,000 thoughts each day, 60,000. Do you doubt that reinforcing "I’m stupid or I’m ugly" over the years with thousands of negative beliefs is going to create anything other than what you’re telling yourself? Of course not!
It’s important for you to know that most individuals who played a mentor role, never meant to contribute to you developing a negative self-image. They either did the best they knew how or they really believed in what they were telling you. If you can simply learn to accept that and forgive them for an honest mistake, you wipe the slate clean in that arena.
Now, when it comes to events, you have been pretty responsible all by yourself for how those events have shaped your self-image. Here’s why. You did what we all do based on past events, we gave the event meaning and we mis-interpreted the event in a negative manner. As a result, we developed data to support our interpretation and wah-lah, we have begun to create our negative self-image.
Here’s that silver lining again; if you can develop the above thoughts based on a poor self-image, then would you agree that you have the power to do just the opposite. Think about that for a moment. If you created the negative self-image you presently have of yourself, then why couldn’t you re-create a new positive self-image?
Here’s what’s happening when you’re operating from a poor self-image. The energy you’re generating is based on lax or scarcity, so you’re vibrating negative energy into your day. Because you don’t believe you deserve to be successful or to be happy you’re not. What you believe is true! Here’s what we can all do to begin to change our self-image, which in turn will alter our self-limited beliefs. Begin to simply question the thought and behavior when it surfaces that you can’t be someone you want to be or do something that you want to do. Simply "Be Aware" when a thought or a self-limited belief surfaces; just be aware that you had the thought, felt the feeling, acknowledge it and shift it.
Anyone who is happy, prosperous or successful, will tell you that they believe in the event, person or opportunity before it arrives. Be the "welcome mat" to the life that you want to live. Empower yourself to believe you can and you will. Live the life of your dreams............live a fulfilled life!

By: Dr. Gary S. Goodman | 18/12/2009My dad was a great believer in luck, and I suppose in many ways, he lived a charmed life.
