How to Achieve Excellence

Why is there a need for passion for excellence? Because this maybe the one key to succeed in business. My husband and I had always been dreaming of growing our business. Growing the business in a sense that there is a bigger mission than making money. Making money is easy. If you have an item to be sold, you make money. If you have a skill to offer, you make money. If you offer your services to corporations or organizations, you make money. Now what can be greater than that? There are so many intangible things that are greater than “making money.” That is why organizations have a “mission and vision.” People in the organization should know the objective of the company that they are working for. An organization must be guided by a common goal and the employees must be pointing on the same north and that these goals must be defined and communicated well to the members of the organization. Every unit of the society strive to achieve a certain mission and vision. They would like to operate for a cause.

In the Philippines, there are a lot of small, medium and large-scale businesses – from manufacturing to distribution to retailing and even service industries. At one time, all of these businesses were all profit oriented. They have focused so much into making their organizations a money making machine. But the world of trading has slowly evolved into being people oriented. They have realized that the businesses with a definite direction and are operating for a greater cause produced more in terms of relationships and profits. They have recognized that “people” are the major factor in sustaining the business. People would compose of internal and external clients and it is imperative to strike a balance in regarding both. The quality of treatment that these people get from the organization reflect and radiate in their response to the business operation as well as in the community.

It has been our vision as a couple to facilitate the opportunities available throughout. We have dreamed of a prosperous community for our children. My husband would always say how he is willing to dedicate his lifetime to assume uphill struggle to build and empire and contribute in the national development for the future of our children. He had established an organization to uphold his vision. A company that would support aspiring entrepreneurs and thriving businesses as well – in the aim to provide opportunities to people who thirst for growth and improvement. I have committed to be one with him in this endeavor because I believe that the Philippines and its people have so much potential in terms of skills and resources. The skillfulness should be carried out in the right avenue. This avenue is our focal point – a corporation that would bridge poverty to prosperity. As a first step, we find ways to give people the proper motivation they need to “dream.” Dreams are pathways to succeed. When an individual dreams – he manifests hope. In dreams come aspiration for brilliance and a better life.

A good community is composed of informed and discerning citizens living a good life. How do we achieve this? Leave mediocrity and complacency behind! There was an instance when my husband and I are scouting for a supplier to produce for a product requirement abroad. We have been going around looking for small – scale business to grant the project to. We are convinced that in giving them an opportunity to make it big – they may be able to extend this opportunity by providing jobs to skilled individuals in their neighborhood. In the past, we have dealt with a supplier who is apprehensive to commit its services – fearing that they may not deliver on time. At first it was a problem of regularity. We thought that there must be a way to rise above this hesitation. So with our six-month old baby – we went to the shop and had spoken with the manager. With much energy, we have offered the project to them. We were a little astounded when we were told that the owners and the management refuse to manufacture goods for export because it requires triple the quality of what they are presently producing. They are content to manufacture inferior materials anyway people in the community settle on the ongoing standard.

Mediocrity and complacency dictates the quality of life that people live through because they “settle.” They avoid to be inconvenienced to improve their craft even if it means their quality of life is compromised. Others would claim that it is their providence to live an average or poor life. The fact is that they can do something about it and it is vital to pronounce that they have a choice – we all have a choice. The goods exported to industrialized countries are of superior quality because these countries set the standard. They have chosen to surmount inferiority. They dreamt and strived as a nation to achieve the kind of life that they want to live and they have it – urbane and cultured but diplomatic. The third world countries could also achieve the same if the people would dream, believe and strive to achieve a mission – the mission to nurture their passion for excellence.

By: Dr. Gary S. Goodman | 18/12/2009

But for the fact that dad's car sped past a train, little Gary wouldn't have been brought into this world, later on, and that would have been pop's last romance.
