Leaving Behind a Legacy

No matter what scientists and skeptics say, eternity seems to be deeply embedded into the hearts of humans. If it is any indication, movies, novels, and short stories have explored the topic of eternal life. A number of people are willing to kill people for the sake of finding the elixir of youth. Scientists are always trying to create long-lasting robots, and they seem to be concocting all sorts of chemicals to prolong life. Villains in fantasy films are always seeking dominion over everything on earth. And they intend to be around for as long as they could.

Seventy years seems to be a short time for people with a defined purpose and long-term goal in this world. However, for people who have neither defined nor discovered their purpose, this number of years may be spent in boredom or in a perpetual search for that ever-elusive purpose. You might not want that to happen and later in life when you have found your purpose, it might be too late because you may no longer have the strength or the will to carry on the purpose you have discovered for yourself.

People who are longing for everlasting life or a very long life perhaps are looking to leave behind a legacy so that even when they are gone, people all over the world can remember them for what they have done in history. Whether this legacy is good or bad, history remembers people who have followed their purpose.

Look at Jesus Christ. Two thousand years after his life on earth, he is still remembered by millions of followers around the world. Think of Joseph Stalin or Adolf Hitler. These men may not have the best purposes in the world yet they are remembered because they had purpose albeit a very negative one at that.

When you want to leave behind a legacy, think about your life, your purpose, and the skills and the talents that you have as these will guide you in the fulfillment of such a purpose. Look deep into your heart for your concern about your fellow humans. You may find out that you lack the charisma, the wealth, or the connections to pursue the goals that can help the lives of other people. But as long as long as you know that you are pursuing what you love, you can be sure to affect deeply the lives of other people around you.
