Some of the discipline I received I felt was very unnecessary; just a way for my parents to relieve their frustrations by inflicting pain upon the children. Why not just explain to me what I did wrong and why it was wrong?
I reacted with frustration and anger, which brought on more discipline without explanation or a hug to let me know that it will be okay.
When my mother told me she had to spank me because she loved me, I did not understand. How can you inflict pain onto someone you love? Quite simply it taught me at a very young age that hitting, kicking, and pinching are the way to relieve my frustrations.
If only my parents could have explained to me what I did wrong and why it was wrong. I longed for that connection but never did receive it. My parents refuse to discuss any of these things with me, even today. I don’t discipline my children in the same fashion. I love my children and I could never inflict that kind of pain to them. There is a better way.
What I Learned From It
Today in American culture it can be very challenging to discipline your children in the appropriate manner. It seems to me that every culture has there own appropriate and inappropriate rules about discipline. Do you discipline your children in the same manner as your parents disciplined you? I know for me that is certainly not the case. Although I was disciplined the Amish culture way and now of course I discipline my children the American culture way or at least for the most part.
Secondly, the fact that I do it differently than my parents did is the generational difference. Things changes over the years; trends come and go. Discipline is the same way; what was appropriate in American culture years ago is no longer appropriate today. I know my children have given me some very challenging moments. What I wanted to tell you about in this section is how I was disciplined at home; how I felt about that discipline at the time; and what I learned from the experience.
