Wise Wheels Car Rental
South Africa
Every year during winter, the car rental companies in Cape Town, South Africa go through a heavy decline in rentals. This is the way it has been forever, never mind how much you try Meetings, Incentives, Conference and Exhibitions (MICE) tourism. This year, the winter is going to be a little colder for everyone.
It seems as though the best of optimists are turning into pessimists, and it’s a sad state of affairs. Reading the paper this morning, I read in three different columns the writers were quoted saying “it has gone beyond what we predicted…” So is the world in a depression? In my opinion, South Africa’s depression has been fueled from a world depression.
Petrol has gone up over 50% from last year, electricity is planning on going up 50% in one foul swoop, food is today’s issue on the news with the price increasing dramatically in the last few weeks. On top of this, we have xenophobia and the world looking at us accusingly and comparing us to Zimbabwe. Our president Thabo Mbeki, when he is here tends to ignore that there is any problem and Jacob Zuma, an “alleged criminal” is South Africa’s shining star. And this is the very beginning.
People get down, things ebb-and-flow, and I see this as something the world has to go through every couple years – a major depression. Stock markets will crash, property will nose-dive and people will panic. Don’t panic. If you are reading this, I assure you, it gets better. It gets to a level where somebody turns around, and tells the world to get their butts into gear – and you can feel the buzz and enthusiasm come back. People start getting creative and positive. “We need happy people, apply here”
So, in the meantime – when the going is bad anyway, take a break, take a holiday. It may not be sunny, but you can still get away to a great guesthouse with a jacuzzi and some friends. Break open a cheap bottle of bubbly, and forget about your problems for a week or two. When you get back, get creative, get positive. Just because the country may be going through a temporary setback does not mean that you have to on a personal level.
Have fun, and make the most of life.
