Ten Shocking Coaching Questions

1. Who are you not being, living your life like this?

Places the client's current behaviour in contrast with who they want to be. This contrast can be startling, and the question is designed to make it sharp.

2. How much time do you think you have?

This addresses the fact that most people go about their lives as if they were immortal, or at least had all the time in the world. Clearly, this is not the case. Yet unless we realise how lazy we are getting as a consequence of this perception of time, little will be done.

The intention is to generate a sense of urgency to act.

3. What sickens you about your old approach?

This brings out aspects that client's would often prefer to suppress and not contemplate. So we want to draw those out yet not judge. Simply as a means of getting all the cards on the table.

4. What do you want your life to be about – today?

Here we make a bigger frame and ask of the client to see the wider context of their life as a whole. From that perspective, to ask what do they want their life to be about? namely, what matters to them!

5. When did you start holding yourself back?

The presupposition in this is clear. As in, the infamous, "When did you stop beating your wife?"

It presupposes that the power of shift, to move, to act is with the client, and that any resistance is merely another act of the client's just in the opposite direction!

6. What might you achieve with a week’s release from yourself?

Once again, this question allows the client a moment to reflect on their possibilities by de-framing their normal view of the world and themselves. It may provide enough space to discover new threads.

7. What would be outrageous for you to even think about doing?

This question allows the client to "think the unthinkable". Such responses would normally have been cut off at the pass by fears and lack of belief.

8. Looking at your actions, what game had you been playing?

This explores the client's deeper motives for carrying on with their existing behaviours. It looks at what such behaviours allow the client to escape from or avoid.

9. What game does your heart call out to you to play?

Here the focus shifts to the heart and we want to explore a new paradigm of possibility. What calls to the client's heart?

10. Are you ready to play a new game?

Finally, the call to action!
