If you do decide that you want to get a backpack from the department store, you should be ready for it not to hold up long. This is because it's really not made to be used for heavy items and could break on you.
This is not an easy thing to deal with. You may not know if you should pay the extra money for the backpack from the motorcycle gear store, but you should consider that you may put a heavy item in your backpack and you will want it to hold together for you. This may not happen with a backpack from your local store because they are only made for light books and school work. Take the time to figure out what you are going to use it for so that you can get the one that fits your needs best and you will be able to make the most out of it.
