The All Terrain Vehicle is long believed to be the wheel of choice for the rugged men who love the outdoors, But now, women and even children are now jumping to the ATV bandwagon for various reasons. Of course, the ATV is one ride that can give its rider a different kind of thrill no other vehicle can.
You might be thinking of buying one and roll into the Great Outdoors. But before you fish for your wallet, make sure you know how check the thing before you cash it out.
With a real tight economy these days, it is quite a logical move that you settle with a previously owned ATV. There's nothing wrong with buying a reconditioned quad bike. Little tweaks here and there could spell a lifetime of all terrain riding. You just have to know how to spot a good ATV inside and out.
If you really want to get your hands on a used but totally working ATV, you just need to follow these tips:
Check out for rusts. Look closely the shock mounts, intersections of frame components, inside of the gas tanks and A-arm mounts. If you find a speck of rust in these areas, you better be wary, they maybe signs of a previous stress and cracks. You will have to spend for welding and repainting to repair them.
Test the wheels for loose ball joints and worn out wheel bearings. Raise the ATV so you could move the wheels in all directions.
Look for dirt and water in the air box. If it does contain them, it is best that you look for another ATV as presence of these two in the air box can potentially damage the ATV engine.
If you have 4x4 ATVs in mind, then better spot for chocolate brown-colored gear lubrication and busted joint boots. If you find them, better turn the deal down. gear lube of such color and joint boots in not so mint condition can mean more dollars for repairs.
Check the little essentials. Make sure the engine oil doesn't look contaminated. The handle bars, head lights, tail lights, brakes and engine shut off switch should work well.
Take note of the ATV parts if they are too old, though still functional. You could use such knowledge in commanding a better, more amiable price.
