Check out the all new Power Scooter - Mahindra Rodeo
Plying around to your workplace and executing your day to day chores has become so much easier with scooters like Mahindra Rodeo around. Rodeo is from the genre of “twist-the-throttle-and-go operation,” a very convenient yet highly powerful gearless scooter. Scooters have come a long way from the days of ‘Vespa’ in Italy. Here is a look at the history of scooters over the years.
Scooters were invented in response to the problems posed by war-ravaged roads on which travelling was rather difficult. The invention of scooter can be traced down to Italy after the Second World War. With dilapidated and destroyed roads, the need was for a low cost and efficient transportation system which Italians could use in the time of distress.
An Italian company Piaggio who were into the manufacturing business, and had aircrafts in their portfolio took the initiative. Manufacturer of huge machines had to think small considering the need of the hour.
Enrico Piaggio, the founder's son, realized the need for an affordable form of transport and entrusted the responsibility of developing such a vehicle to Corradino D'Ascanio who is credited with inventing the helicopter. This inventor of helicopter created a vehicle that could move on two wheels and was as exciting as a helicopter. D' Ascanio created a single chassis two-wheeler and showed it to Enrico Piaggio who felt that it looked like a wasp. ‘Vespa’ is Italian for wasp and hence that was finalized as its name. The first Vespa was manufactured in 1946 and within a decade or so it was being exported to other European countries.
Legendary entrepreneur Ferdinando Inocennti then followed suit. The ravaged state of the country after World War 2, led him to create a two-wheeler which could provide the necessary protection from the weather unlike a motorcycle and maneuver the war torn streets of Italy. This led to the creation of the Lambretta, a highly fuel efficient scooter.
The Japanese started the “twist-the-throttle-and-go operation”. By the mid 80’s, the Japanese came up with scooters that had fresh modern lines, not like the Italian models at all. Honda, with its Elite scooter, and Yamaha, with its Riva model, jumped into the scooter market. The Italians saw them as cheap plastic copies, but consumers loved them. Honda’s Aero 50 has been referred to as the first modern scooter.
Another big reason for the Japanese scooter success was their ability to develop engines that were more environmentally-friendly. The Japanese scooters were so successful that they eventually drove Vespa out of the U.S. market.
In India too scooters form a major part of people’s transportation system and India flaunts a rich History of scooters. The two major scooter manufacturers in India were, LML and Bajaj. Scooters India Limited was the name given to the Lambretta brand which was acquired by the Indian Government. The company manufactured the first scooter in the country called Vijai Super and thus India's love story for the scooters began.
Now you see all kinds of geared and gearless scooters from Bajaj, Honda, Suzuki etc. Though geared scooters are slowly becoming a thing of past because of their inefficient and polluting engines. Mahindra and Mahindra, the leaders in manufacturing of utility vehicles in India, has also stepped into the scooter bandwagon with 3 of its exciting new models, Flyte, Duro and Rodeo.
The Mahindra Rodeo is the perfect choice for the young urban male. It is a high performance, feature-packed scooter with a distinctly macho demeanor.
