Mind Your Motorcycle

No one wants to pay over and above the odds to insure their vehicle and there are various ways you can help cut the cost of your motorcycle insurance.

First of all there are three different levels of motorcycle insurance in the United Kingdom: third party, third party fire and theft and fully comprehensive cover.

Third party insurance is the cheapest option and is the most basic type of cover available. This type of insurance policy pays out for damage to someone else or their property if your bike is involved in an accident. The cost of repair or replacement to your own motorcycle is not covered.

Third party, fire and theft insurance provides the same cover as third party insurance, but in addition covers the cost of repairing or replacing your bike if it's stolen or damaged by fire.

Comprehensive is the most expensive but also the most inclusive type of policy available. As well as having all the features of third party motorcycle insurance, it will cover repairs to your bike, the loss if it's stolen, and may offer additional features such as legal expenses cover.

Once you have decided which type of policy to opt for then shop around to find the most competitive deal. Compare prices and policy details from several different insurers to see which suits you and your budget best and remember to compare like for like.

You might even find that simply arranging your insurance online can entitle you to added discount so use the internet to arrange everything if possible.

When it comes to arranging your insurance make sure you have an accurate idea of your annual mileage because this helps to obtain a more precise insurance quote. The less time your bike is on the road the less likely you are to make a claim so drivers with a low annual mileage usually receive lower premiums.

Your insurance premium is determined by your age, generally the younger you are the higher the cost, as well as the make, power and capacity of your motorbike's engine and the area in which you live.

Insurance companies will also take into account your driving record including previous accidents, claims and road traffic convictions.

In light of this you can keep your bike as secure as possible in order to minimise the risk of threat. If you have a garage then make some space for you motorcycle here. You could also fit an insurance approved lock and alarm, immobiliser or data tag identification and tracking system and keep your pride and joy safe from theft.

Mind where you keep your bike when you’re out and about too and don’t park anywhere unsafe. By taking steps like this you can keep your premium costs down.

Last but not least you could complete an approved advanced riding course which will lower the cost of your motorcycle insurance premiums and make you a more informed driver.
