If you’ve recently purchased your first motorcycle, then you probably spent an inordinate amount time agonizing over every little detail. Unfortunately, in the process you probably neglected the importance of a high quality motorcycle helmet. Many people treat their helmets as afterthoughts and as a result they end up with cheaply made, ill fitted, uncomfortable helmets that aren’t even necessarily safe. Don’t let this happen to you, instead check out my tips and suggestions regarding the fit, comfort, retention and coverage you should seek out when purchasing a new helmet.
When picking out the perfect helmet, you want to make sure that it fits your head safely and securely. If you purchase it from a dealer, the sales staff will most likely have a little bit of expertise, so seek out their advice when possible. If you’re unable to get professional advice, then make sure that when you are wearing the helmet you can shake your head in all directions without any movement from the helmet.
While you of course want your helmet to fit snug, you also want to make sure that it is comfortable as well; otherwise it could severely downgrade your riding experiences. It may be hard to tell if a helmet is comfortable initially, so you’ll have to try on several to compare, not just one or two. And generally speaking, you’ll also have to pay a little more for a truly comfortable helmet, so be prepared to spend the extra cash because well- known brands are usually the most comfortable.
After you’ve tested the fit and comfort of several helmets, you’ll also want check for retention because your helmet is no good if it can’t even stay on when you really need it. The easiest way to test for this is to properly place the helmet on and fasten its strap, then grab the back of the helmet and try to lift the helmet up as hard as you can. You should never be able to get the helmet off, even when you are trying with all of your might. If you’re able to pull it off then consider another helmet.
When it comes to coverage, the more you can get the better. A full-face helmet provides the most protection from injury, so it will probably be your best bet. You should also look for a helmet that will not just provide ample shell coverage, but that will also have more EPS liner coverage on the inside of the helmet. This will absorb more of the impact, should you get into an accident. If you are unsure of how much ESP liner you should expect, just make sure that it extends all the way to the chin-bar of the helmet.
Don’t let your motorcycle helmet be an afterthought. It’s an incredibly important component, necessary for your overall safety. By owning a quality helmet, you’ll not only reduce facial and brain injuries, but you’ll also benefit from reduced fatigue, as well as improved hearing. And of course, once you’ve settled on a properly fit, comfortable and safe helmet, then it’s time to focus on style. As long as you take the time, you’re sure to find a great helmet that will also reflect your personal tastes.
