Motorcycle Safety: Staying Safe On Your Motorcycle Trips

Motorcycle riding can be a wonderful experience for anyone that loves to get out on the open road and explore the country side to take in the scenery and fresh air.  It’s important to keep safety in mind while riding in order to experience the safest, most enjoyable ride possible.  Here are some tips to keep in mind while your out on your motorcycle that will help to keep you safe.

First of all, before you head out on any motorcycle trip, always make sure you have the proper gear and protective clothing.  Helmets, jackets, chaps, gloves, boots, and glasses are just a few essential items that you should have in order to help protect yourself while you are on the road.  Each one of these items provide a certain aspect of safety so it’s important that you not disregard any one of them if you want to be fully prepared for your ride.

Like any other vehicle, your motorcycle must also be inspected before each and every ride in order to prevent any major malfunctions or breakdowns in the middle of your ride.  Always check things like tire pressure, oil levels, lights, and brakes in order to make sure that these items are fully functional and in optimal condition.  Your tires are perhaps one the most important pieces of equipment, aside from your brakes, and you should take extra caution when making sure that they are in acceptable condition for riding. Signal lights, headlights, and break lights are all very important items that must be in good working order when you are riding.  Since you are on a motorcycle and you are already at a disadvantage on the road because of your size, you need all the help you can get in order to make yourself visible.  That’s why it is important to make sure all of your lights are working properly.  Test out your horn too.  You never know when you may need to signal to someone that you are present.

If you’re planning on heading out on a big trip, make sure you have your destinations pointed out and that you know which routes you are taking.  This will help to keep your trip organized and on schedule.  If you have a route map drawn out, make a copy of it and give it to someone that will not be traveling with you.  This would be helpful in locating you if something were to happen to you.  

It’s also very important to practice good riding skills while on your motorcycle.  You were able to get your motorcycle license by passing a rider test, or by taking a rider course so you should have learned many of the necessary tips and techniques for riding safely.  Now is the time to practice those techniques over and over so you’re sure you are riding as safe as you can possibly ride.  Always make sure you are riding safely, not just for your sake, but for the sake of others on the road as well.
