‘Dead Snow' Movie Review

Tommy Wirkola’s Norwegian zombie picture “Dead Snow” can be said the best and the most entertaining Zombie movie. We all know Zombies being evil and ruthless but Zombies who are also Nazi’s and undead followers of Adolf Hitler – come on, nothing can get horrible than that.

Not only the plot and acting is fantastic and the multi-layered screenplay is brilliant but also its fun to watch the flesh-eating Stormstroopers. They are Nazi officers and soldiers whose frozen bodies, long hidden underneath the snow of Norway's hinterlands, have now been reanimated. Their victims are a group of college students who have trekked to a remote cabin for a weekend of wintertime fun. The gang is a typically diverse group - sexy girls, nerdy boys and one unlikely hero.

Although not exactly very scary, Dead Snow shows lots of enthusiasm, imagination, and a powerful loyalty to all things ultra-splattery. Wirkola has tried his best to play the movie as a horror- comedy. He is very careful not to break character and to not undercut the horror by making his zombies funny. Of course there is comedy throughout the film but is very crafty. The final section of the movie is absolutely over-drenched with blood-bath, energy and insanity. The blood-drenched fight scenes out in the snow are frighteningly entertaining, and even beautiful, with all that red being photographed against so much white.

Also, the technical elements of the film are very strong - the cinematography, in particular, is gorgeous and showcases the natural environment of the film to great effect. Dead Snow is not entirely without its hiccups - the climax could be a touch stronger, but it is a hugely entertaining film, and a big time crowd pleaser.

BONUS – “Treevenge” is a comedy-horror film that was screened in the Sundance film festival in short film category. Directed by Jason Eisener, the movie details horrifying reality and experiences of Fir trees for countless Decembers. For these fir trees, Christmas isn’t exciting. After being cut down and shipped away from their homes, they are made to stand up for all to see and humiliated by dazzling decorations. But now they have had enough- they are ready to take revenge. The resulting blood-bath is dreadful as well as uproarious. This extremely funny mini-movie will make you think twice before cutting a tree and putting it into your house for a few futile weeks. Hats off to the director who showed us in just 15 minutes what many can’t show in even 90.
