This unflinching documentary tells the story of Shirley Chisholm who in 1972 would be the first African American female to seriously run for the presidency. Director Shola Lynch bridges numerous stock footage and members of Chisholm’s original campaign management to bring to the screen a true American who wanted to not only educate African Americans and all females about what they could do to influence their political government and body but to also open people’s eyes to how we should all come together not just all African Americans and not just all females but all Americans to change the face of our nation in a time when the Vietnam war was tearing us apart.
Chisholm was a force to be reckoned with because even when people and everyone else in the Democratic party (she was running for the Democratic nomenation) told her she had no chance of winning, she stood her ground never backing down even though there were three attempts made on her life.
We are even given the pleasure of knowing first hand in Chisholm’s own words what affect she wanted for her nation. She wasn’t doing it for just the African American and women’s movements, she was doing it for a nation that needed to open its eyes and saw herself as a “catalyst for change.” Chisholm’s journey is a remarkable one into a remarkable woman who had an affect on our nation not seen since (although the scandal involving President Nixon and watergate which occurred two years later does come close).
