Film Review: Congo

CONGO was meant to cash in on the popularity of the JURASSIC PARK film since both were based on best selling novels by Michael Crichton, but without the awe and mystery of giant stories roaming around this film had to rely more on the adventure of going to exotic Africa on a grand adventure. Marketed as an killer apes adventure flick the film was misunderstood and quickly forgotten upon its initial release.

Taking a look back at the film there is much to be had and much to be desired in the film. Although Stan Winston provided the apes for this film (like he’s done so for almost every Hollywood film that features an ape in the past few decades) Amy, the ape in this film, is slightly dated and not as realistic as even the apes Winston provided in GREYSTOKE, THE LEGEND OF TARZAN or GORILLAS IN THE MIST, which are both much older films.

Directed by Frank Marshall the adventure aspects of the film still hold up well especially since the ensemble cast of mid-level actors, at the time, (Laura Linney, Dylan Walsh, Ernie Hudson, Tim Curry, and Grant Heslov) all work extremely well together. This camaraderie is what holds the bare-bones plot together and keeps the film moving along in an alarming rate.

Another thing that works in the films favor is the exotic location and Marshall insistence to use the continent of Africa as a character herself. The biggest adventure of the film is the journey to their final destination and all the obstacles that get in their way. Expertly staged these are the aspects of the film that make it an enjoyable adventure film of which many lesser films fail to accomplish.
