I wanted to like this little indie film about of group of college kids who detour from their road trip to an abandoned amusement park that harbors dark secrets of its own. Going in I knew that it couldn’t be too much new that I hadn’t already seen and/or experienced before but the previews were entertaining and the production values looked good, which I have to hand it to the production the film looks excellent on par with some of the wider released films of late.
The plot is pretty thin (much to my chagrin) but the production design is top notch which I have to hand it to Production Designer Fred Andrews. Cinematography by Vincent E. Toto brings the location to vivid life which is great since the location itself is the true character of the film, I only wished it had been populated with more interesting and complex characters. A downfall is that with such a beautiful location it isn’t utilized enough in the film (such as the location in EVENT HORIZON) and instead we are given the minutia of boring characters to feast upon while the crazed killer takes them out one by one.
Another drawback to the film is the killer himself who is about as interesting as a Jason Voorhees knockoff so when he’s lumbering around in dark corners its very bland and unsuspenseful but Toto and director Craig Singer do add flair to a few of the death scenes that does at least go for the jugular but they also must be faulted for leaving several deaths off screen. For a film like this which is predictable in every way the death scenes should be onscreen and in a creative manner.
DARK RIDE is an okay ride with a few jolts but I wouldn’t stand in line a second time for it.

One of my favourite cartoons as a child is going to get updated into a film. Yeah, we heard it before and the Voltron movie posibilities just didn’t seem to be happening. But word is now that movies like Transformers are proving to be a big hit, they are looking at other franchises that just didn’t seem realistic to make movies out of.
