Filming in certain locations is not always practical or affordable in the making of many films, TV programmes. Also, producing scenery of a very high quality to specific deadlines, on a large physical scale is a service that’s not easy to find. Experience, knowledge, and capacity all play a part in being able to get something as specific and important as this to the customer. Ultimately, the ‘background’ to something has to be good enough to actually remain in and be accepted as the background, and to enhance and strengthen whatever is happening in front of it, making it more believable.
Isn’t it about just reproducing a photo?
In a word, no. Simply reproducing a ‘blown up’ version of a photo is actually not ‘realistic’ enough when on screen or on stage. Photographs really need to go through an enhancement process to make sure that when in a larger format they are still as ‘real’ as possible, and as close to the original photograph.
Would I need to supply my own photograph?
If the company you go to for a backdrop has an extensive image library anyway, it’s possible that there may well be a suitable image available already that can be used. This could save you time and money.
Would I have to buy the backdrop?
No. backdrops can be rented – they don’t have to be purchased. Pre-existing backdrops can be ordered and shipped to the location of the film / TV programme for a limited period of time.
Will I need separate backdrops to show the same view in the day and the night?
Once again the answer is no. Day and night backdrops / translights are backdrops that can go from being a realistic daytime image to becoming a realistic night time image at the flick of a switch.
Will it take a long time before I receive my backdrop?
No. A good printed scenic backdrop can often be make in a week (from receipt of the high quality photograph).
