How to Keep Your Stuff Safe in Self Storage

People all over the country take advantage of self-storage facilities for a variety of reasons. Some individuals or families are forced to move from large homes to smaller houses that do not have adequate space. In other situations friends or couples moving in together find that they have two households worth of belongings that simply will not fit in one location. Regardless of your reasons for storing your items it is important that you keep your belongings safe while they are in self-storage.

The first step in the process of keeping your things safe when they are in self-storage is picking a good self-storage location. These days most cities and towns have several self-storage facilities available to choose from and it is important to choose a self-storage location that is in a safe neighborhood. If you are not sure about the neighborhood or area you are considering, take some time and complete some independent research.

When you have decided on one or two different self-storage facilities look into the background of the companies. Your items will not be safe if they are under the care of a disreputable company. Find out whether or not the self-storage facility has a history of complaints or issues that resulted in the loss of personal property. Always try to avoid any facility that has a history of robberies or not doing anything to ensure the safety of their clients property. When you do find a self-storage facility that has a clean background begin looking for obvious security features.

Self-storage facilities with large gates, fences, and restricted access should always be your first choice. These self-storage facilities usually only allow clients on the property during certain hours of the day. This might seem like an inconvenience but it helps the facility manager and employees keep an eye out for any suspicious activity. While these security measures might not deter serious criminals they will discourage petty thieves looking for an easy opportunity.

Fences, security gates, and restricted access features can make a big difference when it comes to the safety of your personal items. Do not use self-storage facilities that are open to anyone that drives onto the property. Try to find self-storage facilities that require security codes for all access to the self-storage units. In addition to looking for obvious security features discuss additional security features with the self-storage staff or managers.

Find out whether or not the self-storage facility has evening security guards that patrol the grounds. Not all self-storage facilities provide this additional security measure but if you can find a facility that does offer live security guards choose it above all others. If no security guards are present inquire about video surveillance. A self-storage facility that offers video surveillance will help you reclaim lost property if a break in occurs.

Using self-storage facilities that have working alarm systems is another way to keep your belongings safe. Even when gates, fences, and surveillance are present some individuals are foolish, or desperate, enough to attempt a robbery. With an alarm system in place the authorities will be notified as soon as a break in occurs. If you are looking into a self-storage facility that has an alarm system find out if the police are notified or a private security company. Try to choose a self-storage facility that is willing to notify the police department since this will be in your best interest. Avoid self-storage facilities that seem unwilling to involve the police in any crimes committed on their property. If you find a facility that seems to discourage police reports being filed consider avoiding them. This practice means you have no way of knowing how many clients have lost property at their facility over the years.

Once you have done everything in your power to find a self-storage facility that will keep your belongings safe from robbery you must protect your items from deterioration. Keeping clothes, furniture, and other items in storage for a long period time can lead to serious damage. When you are offered storage space for your items it is important that you check for signs of dampness, mildew, or mold. If at all possible always try to use a storage facility that offers climate control. Having your items kept at a stable temperature will help preserve your belongings until you are able to retrieve them.

When you place your personal belongings into self-storage it is important that you do everything in your power to keep your items safe. Without careful planning you will run the risk of damaging or destroying things that you have worked hard to get. By choosing a self-storage facility that is in a safe area with security features you will be doing your part to keep your things safe and secure until you need to retrieve them.
