Moving or Relocating Tips – What Should Children Do Who Are Moving

Moving is not easy for any person, even for adults. And while moving can be a time for some great new things like your own room or a new place to explore, it can also be a time that is sad and disturbing, too.

Here are some ways to make a move a little less upsetting and easier.

Speak About It

When a child find out that he or she will be moving to another town or country, a million thoughts arises in the mind about the new place. Thoughts like they will not be able to make new friends, nervous about school and classmates, whether they will be able to make friends at school. Ask your child how he feels let him speak out his problems. What ever they are feeling. You can give them some good ideas and suggestions.

Ensure about Things

Get to know your new place that you will be living can make your child feel better for a couple of reasons. Your children will feel less edgy, when they know what to expect. Secondly, as they become familiar with the new place they may get excited about the new place. The first thing the children would want to do is see the new apartment or house. If the apartment or the house is brand new than take your children there to see around. Ask for the kids suggestions, how would they like their rooms decorated, the color scheme they would like to have. 

New School!

New school is another stop on this trip. Arrange a visit with a teacher or any other school member to give a tour of the school to your child. So they know what it looks like from the inside and around the school. If your child is interested into school band, sports, or any other clubs, ask which activities they offer at the new school - and what to do if your child wants to join them.

 If you are moving to a distant place to another part of the country, or even a different part of the world, you will need to check things out in a different way. You can do an Internet research and find out about your new town. You also can visit your library and check for books on that city or state.

Pack It Up

Prior to your move, the house will probably be full of commotion and boxes. Ask your children to pack their special stuff in boxes and keep it aside, so they can have it as soon as they get there. This can include personal items, such as stuffed animals, photos, and other stuff that will make them feel at home. It is a good idea to include stuff you will need the first night, such as sheets for your bed, a pillow, pajamas, toothbrush, and other must-haves. Ask someone to mark this box with your name, so you can grab it when it comes off the moving truck.

Getting ready for Goodbyes

It is sad to say goodbye to friends, family, and neighbors. You can make it less sad if you grab an address book ahead of time and have everyone write down his or her address, phone number, and e-mail address.  If you have a camera or video camera, take lots of pictures or videos of your friends, your favorite places, and your neighborhood.

The BIG day - Moving Day

When moving day finally arrives, it is ok to feel gloomy. A lot of people weep when they leave to move. Do not be surprised if grown-ups cry a little, too. But what do you do when you get there? Everyone will probably be pretty busy trying to unpack and set up the new household. When you get to your new house, unpack your special box of favorite stuff. That will help you feel more at home. You can even hang up pictures of your friends and favorite places to remind you of them.

 Moving and settling to a new place may take a little while. You will need patience. And do not forget to keep in touch with your old pals. It can be fun to get email or letters from them and to catch up on what is new.
