Tips for Protecting the Items in Your Storage Unit

Many families and individuals all over the United States have taken advantage of storage facilities for many different reasons. Some individuals or families are forced to move from large homes into smaller, energy efficient homes that just do not have the same amount of storage space. At other times friends or newlywed couples moving into a home or apartment together find that they have too much furniture, appliances, and other belongings to comfortably keep all items... Regardless of your reasons for storing your items it is important that you understand a few tips that are useful for protecting the items in your storage unit.

The first step in the process of keeping your items as safe as possible is choosing a safe location. When you start looking for storage options you will notice dozens of storage facilities in your immediate area. It is important you choose a storage facility that is in a safe neighborhood. If you do not know the crime rates in a certain area do a quick search online with the local police department to review the crime statistics. This will let you know whether or not a safe looking area is really as safe as you would like to believe. If you have found a great deal of negative information on a storage facilities neighborhood then move on. Do not place your valuables in harms way on purpose.

Another step to take for protecting the items in your storage unit is looking into the background of the storage company. The items you place in storage will never be safe if they are under the care of a company with a very bad reputation. Find out whether or not the storage facility has a history of complaints that are directly related to the loss of property through theft, company negligence, or contract violations including putting storage units up for auction before the rent is actually past due. If you find a history of negative complaints always move on even if it means forfeiting a deposit or a months worth of rent. It is worth it in the end if you are able to save your property.

Choose a storage unit that is kept behind large security gates with restricted access. Also try to choose a storage unit that is behind high fences that are extremely hard for the average person to climb. Your items will be safer if they are kept in a situation where only paying customers are able to access the area were the storage units are. In addition to restricted access thanks to fences and gates also look for restricted access due to business hours. While having to visit a storage company strictly during business hours might seem inconvenient at first it will help discourage burglars from making nighttime raids where it will be obvious they got onto the property by illegal or disreputable means.

If at all possible try to use a storage facility has evening security guards that patrol the grounds physically each and every night. Not all storage facilities provide this additional security measures because of their expense, but if you can find a facility that does offer live security guards choose it above all others. If your storage facility does not have live security guards do not be afraid to discuss the option with staff managers or even by writing the corporation. You will be surprised what companies are willing to do in order to keep their clients happy. When the option of security guards is not available or you are waiting to hear back from a company inquire about video surveillance. Storing your items in a storage facility that documents the comings and goings of all visitors will help deter crime. No one wants to be caught on camera doing something wrong or foolish.

Using a storage company that offers alarms is another way to protect the items in your storage unit. Alarms will immediately alert the police in your area if a break in is made or attempted. This will help add additional security measures to prevent desperate thieves who are willing to go past the gates and walls. Ask the staff at your local storage company whether or not they have an alarm system in place. Most companies with video surveillance will also have an alarm as part of the package.

The last and most important tip for protecting your items in your storage unit is being responsible and aware. Careless mistakes could potentially cost you more than anything else. When you are finished with your storage units always remember to close and lock your unit. Double check the padlock you use and make sure you take the key with you. Failing to lock or close your storage unit will send a sign to all available thieves giving them permission to steal the items you have earned through a lifetime of hard work.
