It is called being a teenager.
O.K.
You might be shaking your head thinking, when I was a teenager I could not gain weight even if I spent all day in an all-you-could-eat buffet.
True enough, but here is one thing that most teenagers miss when it comes to gaining weight, be it for bodybuilding, football or any other purpose.
When you are trying to gain muscular bodyweight and are young with a fast metabolism and your hormones are through the roof, plus you are working out, you cannot just eat big for one day, then skip a few days and start again.
You must eat big, every single day.
NUTRITION TIPS
So what exactly do I mean by eating big?
Things like whole eggs, peanut butter sandwiches on whole wheat bread, lean beef, turkey, chicken, pasta, etc.
At this point in your life you need a lot of calories to gain muscular bodyweight so do not be turned off by eating higher fat foods and things like whole eggs.
You need plenty of protein, one gram per pound of bodyweight works good, and plenty of carbohydrates, yes I know carbohydrates and not that popular right now, but you must remember that you are actually trying to gain weight and not lose it.
Also, you need good fat as well, things like, natural peanut butter, the kind without added sugar, sardines, all kinds of nuts and seeds, and fish oil (the liquid fish oil is better) if you can afford it.
SOME POINTS
Break up your food into six meals and try to consume protein, carbohydrates and fats at each meal.
Plus, I do realize that young people will frequent their favorite fast food places, and this is O.K., however, if you do, make it a habit to try and order things plain.
Like a double cheeseburger, but plain, just the bun, the burgers, and cheese, with none of those other toppings, which are full of empty calories, which will do nothing to enhance your bodybuilding or strength building gains.
TRAINING TIP
When you are young your motto should be to not only eat big, but train big too.
By this I mean, focus on the big lifts like, over head presses with dumbbells, squats, deadlifts, bent over rows, power cleans, and front squats.
Do not worry about “shaping” your muscles, gain the muscle now while you can, and then worry about refining it later.
Finally, do not think that training big means to use sloppy form, yes, using more weight is good, but only if you can use it in good form.
Doing otherwise only tends to enforce bad habits, which will more-than-likely will get you injured somewhere down-the-road.
CONCLUSION
Take advantage of your youth, by eating and training big while you can.
When the vast majority of the food you take it will be either burned up by your ultra fast metabolism or used to build muscle and not be stored around your waist as ugly fat.
Work hard, eat big, and gain.
