3 Best Tips on How to Play Violin

Knowing how to play violin is like getting yourself on the road to musical success quickly and effectively. It's like mapping out your plan of action or progress as you begin the exciting and challenging journey of playing a musical instrument. In this articles I am giving you what I think are the top 3 tips to beginning on the right foot.

Tip 1 - Choose a good instrument.

Too many people select the cheapest possible instrument to begin with in fear that they or their child may not stick to this new endeavor. Whilst for some people this is fine, for many it will quickly hamper their progress. Having a cheap instrument of any kind causes you to produce a poor quality of sound. This can quickly tire the ear and leave you bored and frustrated. So go for a beginner model but perhaps choose one that is of a slightly better quality.

Tip 2 - Find a good teacher.

This is obviously a very important part of learning how to play the violin. Your teacher should be highly skilled at both playing and teaching the instrument. Look for someone with a good background, well qualified and experienced. Also try to find someone who you get along with, as having fun whilst you learn is the whole point to enjoying an instrument.

Tip 3 - Develop a practice routine.

This is crucial to your success. Compare this plan of practice to if you were training for a marathon for example. You would need to train regularly, with a goal in mind and work on all aspects of running - from cardio vascular fitness, through to technique and strength, warm ups, stretches and cool downs.

Apply the same principles to your violin practice. Have a warm up and begin to memorize a few scales. Work on pieces everyday and don't forget to include pure technique work like speed or tone production.

If whilst learning how to play violin you can include the three tips above at an early stage, you will find progress quick and fun. Dedicating some time and energy on these will prevent you from becoming frustrated with the instrument or even going 'stale' in your efforts.
