Agam Kumar Nigam's Forth Album

AGAM KUMAR NIGAM

He lived and breathed music from his childhood. But it took Agam Kumar Nigam years of struggle before his melodious voice hit the masses with Uski Yaadon Mein. T Series young music mogul Bhushan Kumar believed in the voice of the man who had spent years of toil to mould young Sonu Nigam into a singer an gave him his first break in Uski Yaadon Mein. This was in 2002. Today, with three immensely successful albums behind him, Uski Yaadon Mein (2002), Bewafai (2005), Phir Bewafai (2007), Agam Kumar Nigam is all poised to bring out his fourth album Wo Bewafa (2008).

THE BEGINNING
From childhood, I wanted to be a playback singer but fate had other plans. At that time, there were no channels, no overnight star thing. There were 4-5 big singers, very few films. People used to take few singers. There were also no platforms at the time. There was no scope for overnight stardom.

THE STRUGGLE
Struggle is a word that is common place for anyone who wants to achieve his goals. Even Amitabh Bachchan used to sit on a bench. With hard work, you know your time will come. You just have to be persistent and consistent in your efforts.

THE CURRENT ALBUM
The music is superlative and the lyrics are very touching. I have also worked a lot as with the success of each album, the expectation of the listener rises. And you have to live up to that. I think my riyaaz reflects in my work and I am happy with the album. Every song is beautiful. And I like that in this album, as usually, you can decide which is your favourite. In this case, I am not able to do that because each song seems to outdo the other.

EXPECTATIONS
People love me for my bewafa numbers. Whether it is small cities and towns or metros like Mumbai my songs have caught on like wild fire and are moneyspinners. But then, I want to be known for my wafa numbers too someday!

Did you sing Uski Yaadon Mein because Sonu insisted that you do? You were also into shows and are a trained singer, but never cut an album….

WHY THE CURRENT ALBUM
I love it when people acknowledge and respect my work. T Series respects my work and so I am cutting the current album. They know how to bring out the best in me.

MY FAVOURITE
Mohammad Rafi, undoubtedly. In my shows, I pay tribute to him.

WHAT ELSE IF NOT A SINGER?
I have always been a fulltime singer I have done nothing else than this. I was not a doctor or a lawyer.

AN ALBUM WIT SONU?
We both never felt the need for it. Professionally we are so different. Frankly, I am very happy Sonu has reached his position. But an album of father-son will make the singer in me wonder if my  contribution will be acknowledged. And if someone tells that I sing better than him, I would not take that as a compliment either. There can be no comparison between a father and son. I am proud of my son and his achievements just as he is of mine.

ON THE TALK OF SONU BEING 'MADE' BY HIS FATHER
I did get him to T Series. And it was his time. So he got the opportunity and he grew with it. It was a lot of hard work for him. Success never comes easy.
As a child, Sonu used to sing since he was three. He used to sing Saraswati Sutra with my wife Shobha. She also is a good singer. And I didn't make him. He came made. He is the son of Goddess Saraswati.
