Martell

I go on a lot of message boards to promote the site and egg on the others as they bitch about things that don’t matter. One of those things they bitch about really bugs me, but I find myself doing it all the time. That topic is follow up albums.
After a band puts out an epic album that everyone loves it seems that the follow up to that is doomed to suck in the eyes of the listener. A prime example of that is Metallica and the Black Album. The Black Album will be forever the break out album for not only Metallica, but for Heavy Edge music. This album managed to get Heavy Metal songs on the radio, videos on MTV, and the casual rock listener head banging. Every single was a hit and the album still continues to sell.
The issue: how was Metallica going to top it with the next album. They were in a no win situation. If they stuck to the same sound people would be disappointed that they never tried anything new. If they tried a new sound people would be disappointed that they turned their back on Heavy Metal. What came out was Load.
The distaste for this album is still talked about today. Metallica mixed up their sound and people were angry, but as stated above, if they stayed with the old sound, people would have been angry. I think it’s our fault.
As fans we expect the same old sound with a whole new feel. Even when you say it the thought is ridiculous. How do you stick to the same old thing, but make it totally new? You can’t!
So maybe we as fans need to realize bands are giving us how they feel at that point in their lives. The reason for this blog is based on the new Three Days Grace album. I loved One X, one of my favorite all time albums, but listening to “Life Starts Now” the new album I was disappointed that it’s not as angry as One X. That’s because in One X Adam was in rehab, so by my logic if I want that same feeling we have to make Adam a druggie. That’s not cool.
I think we should just enjoy what is offered and be happy for our metal heroes if they’re at a point in their lives where they can create from the heart.
