Anyone who has bought tickets on eBay, StubHub, or a ticket broker website knows that there is money to be made selling tickets. Most of the time ticket sellers (sometimes known as scalpers) make anywhere from 50% to 400% profit margin. These are just individual people who buy tickets from Ticketmaster ® and resell them for a much higher price than they bought them for.
Why do tickets sell for more than their face value?
Ticketmaster ® sells tickets in batches based on the seating category you fit in. If you buy tickets in the floor section for a concert. It doesn't matter whether you buy front row floor seats or last row floor seats, they will almost always be the same price when you buy them from Ticketmaster ®. Obviously front row seats for a popular concert have a much higher market value than floor seats at the end of the stadium. What a ticket broker does, is buy the tickets that have a higher market value, and resell them on places like TicketNetwork, eBay, or StubHub for what the real value is.
The other great thing about selling tickets (becoming a ticket broker) is that you do not need a huge amount of capital to start. Say, for example that you wanted to sell purses. First you need to find a supplier (not as easy as it sounds). If you find a supplier you will be buying from them wholesale, which means that you won't be buying 5 purses, but probably at least 500. You can imagine how much money (or maybe debt) you would need to start. In the case of ticket selling, Ticketmaster ® is your supplier and you only need enough money to buy a pair of tickets (anywhere from $75 to $400).
Selling tickets is definitely not a scam or scheme. Feel completely free to do a search for tickets on eBay, StubHub or any brokerage website and look at the prices of the tickets. Many people sell tickets on the side to make some extra cash. However, there are many people who have made ticket brokering/selling/scalping their fulltime profession. It is not uncommon for an individual who knows what they're doing to make $70,000+ per year selling tickets.
I have seen ticket scalpers at the ballgames trying to unload their tickets, is that what I am going to be doing? No! What we are talking about is almost purely internet based. There are many websites where you can sell tickets to potential buyers.
