How to Choose a 1st Dance
By Rich Leggitt – Black Tie Events
Most couples may have an easy time with choosing a first dance. They will have “their” song already in place. It is usually a song that was special to them during the relationship or one that stuck a cord with them leading up to the wedding. For those couples congratulations! This is one more piece of the wedding puzzle you will not have to worry about. This article is not dedicated to you, it is written for those couples who have no idea what song to dance to or how to choose it.
Here are some tips that may help for choose a 1st dance song that will work for you.
1) ASK YOUR DJ - The easiest source is the DJ or band you hire. They should have a list of tried and true 1st dance songs that they play that will fit every situation. From oldies to current music they play these dances every weekend so that will have plenty of suggestions to choose from. Ask them for this list and ask them for their advice, after all that is part of what you are paying them for.
2) FIT YOUR THEME – Some couples set a theme for the wedding and your 1st dance song should fit this theme not work against it. Be it Tropical, Country, Disney, or a Classic wedding theme. Your dance should stay true to this theme. Say you are doing a classic wedding theme and want great oldies played during the reception. Artists like Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, and Louis Armstrong would fit this theme better than a 1st dance song by the Backstreet Boys or Kanye West.
3) FIND AN ARTIST IN COMMON- If you are still having trouble here is a final tip that may help. You should both sit down and each write down a list for 10 of your favorite artists. Chances are you will have a few in common. Then, find a few slow dances from that artist and listen to them to see if that fit what you are looking for. Have fun with the process and you will find one you like.
I hope these tips help. One piece of advice I can give you is don’t stress too much about the lyrics of the song you choose. One bride I worked with broke down each sentence in the song to see if the lyrics fit her situation. She drove herself crazy and couldn’t find a song she was truly happy with. Relax and enjoy the process your 1st dance song will not make or break your event and should be special to you. Have fun and good luck
