Lynyrd Skynyrd is an American rock band, formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1964. The band became prominent in the Southern United States in 1973, and rose to worldwide recognition before three members and one road crew member died in an airplane crash in 1977, including lead vocalist and primary songwriter Ronnie Van Zant. The band reformed in 1987 for a reunion tour with Ronnie's younger brother Johnny Van Zant as the frontman and continues to record music today. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 13, 2006.
In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked the group #95 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. On November 28, 2005, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced that Lynyrd Skynyrd would be inducted alongside Black Sabbath, Blondie, Miles Davis, and the Sex Pistols. They were inducted in the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Manhattan on March 13, 2006. Lynyrd Skynyrd had been nominated 7 times.
On March 13, 2006, Lynyrd Skynyrd was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at the 21st annual induction ceremony. The inductees included Ronnie Van Zant, Allen Collins, Gary Rossington, Ed King, Steve Gaines, Billy Powell, Leon Wilkeson, Bob Burns, and Artimus Pyle.
The Members of Lynyrd Skynyrd are Johnny Van Zant the lead vocals, Gary Rossington at guitars, Rickey Medlocke at drums, guitars, backing vocals, Mark Matejka at guitars & backing vocals, Robert Kearns at bass & backing vocals, Michael Cartellone at drums, Peter Keys at keyboards. The Touring members of this band are Dale Krantz-Rossington at backing vocals & Carol Chase at backing vocals.
American South rock legends Lynyrd Skynyrd have announced plans for their UK 2010 tour. Be it a limited amount of dates, it wills the first time the band have played in the UK since the release of their album”Gold and Guns” earlier this year.
