Building up the callus in your finger tips is something that takes time, and practice. Maybe its obvious, but I think that some times guitar players forget that they more guitar playing that you do, the tougher and stronger your finger tips will get over time, and
usually it doesn't take that long for a guitar player's calluses to harden.
If ever you feel any pain, which in the beginning will usually be more often, take a small break and relax. After you have done this, return to guitar playing. You may feel that you are doing some damage to your finger tips, but as long as you are taking breaks often,
this is very typical of beginning guitar players.
Though you can't hold me to it, I would say that from what I have seen and experienced, usually after about two to three months the calluses start to toughen as they should, but over the course of about a year they will still be developing, and after that for the next few years. However, after at least the first six months the pain should probably not even be there.
If you are having so much trouble that you can't even enjoy guitar playing, there may be a chance that you have more sensitive fingers in general. You might consider switching guitars. For instance, if you are playing on an acoustic, a classical that sports nylon strings could be gentler on the fingers. Switching string gauge may also help.
All in all, be mindful of your fingers when learning guitar, but also understand that calluses take a little time to develop properly if you are trying to learn and master guitar playing. It will go away though, as this is something that everyon goes through when learning guitar.
