Piano Care - Piano Regulation Briefly Explained

Inside your piano is what is known as an action. When you play a key on your piano, it doesn't stop there. Between the key being struck and the hammer inside the piano that strikes the string to create the sound you hear is a pretty complex mechanism that needs attention every so often. This action consists of thousands of parts (almost 10,000) that need to be adjusted -or regulated - so that the piano plays at its highest potential by responding to your playing the keys in a most efficient manner. Your piano also has within it an assembly of levers, dowels, and springs that act as a connection between the pedals to the action, so that you can effectively and creatively control the dynamics as well as sustain the sound when it is preferred. This assembly is know as the trapwork of your piano. When you play a key on the piano and release that key, the sound stops. This is controlled both by the key itself and the pedals. This is known as the damper system of your piano.

As your piano ages, there is always a certain amount of wear and tear that takes place including cloth, felt, and buckskin. In addition, humidity changes play a significant part in causing wood and wool parts to require attention due to dimensional changes. In order to compensate for all these changes, adjustments to to be made. This is a complex process that only a qualified piano technician is capable of tending to properly. This process is known as regulation. Be sure your piano gets the kind of attention it needs, including regulation as well as adequate tuning.
