Rap, or, Busting a Cap in Culture
Right off the bat, I want to clarify something: I love music. I love the way it can stir emotions and, indeed, our souls. Then there’s rap. I don’t mean to lump all rap together, but there is enough of a problem that I do. Let’s consider it. One defense for rap is that it is a portrayal of poor neighborhoods in the “ghetto”. If you came from a broken or poor home and you want to sing about it, that’s fine, it’s your right to bare your heart. However, I fervently oppose singing about murder and lack of respect for women. Even if you did some violent things back in the day, if you were even in that situation, that doesn’t mean you should sing about shooting, stabbing, and strangling people. Forgive me if I’m being naïve, but even if you sell a million CDs from writing violent songs, does that mean you should keep doing it? I’m not a pacifist by any means, mind you. I play violent video games, watch violent movies, and have been in my share of fights. However, having to listen to this junk on the radio, which I don’t even use any more because of crap like that, is just too much. You don’t even have to get the warning labeled CD to listen to that stuff. Perhaps now is the time to mention that I do oppose youth playing violent videogames, but that is a discussion for another time. Keep your murdering crap off the Internet.
Second of all, back off of women. Women are a glowing example of the beauty of God and jewels on this Earth. They are not a collection of sluts and hos. You’ve made the image of a woman with practically no clothes on sleeping with total strangers an attractive prospect. Think about it, how many women and even young girls have you seen wearing things so revealing that you wonder who the Hell had the audacity to make them? I used to live next door to an elementary school, and sometimes I’d walk home from somewhere in time to see the little kids leaving. I saw girls that had to be like 7 or 8 wearing things that were mind-boggling, as much what it looked like as the fact that their parents would buy it for them. I wonder, how bad is the peer pressure for a girl in 3rd or 4th grade to dress like a hussy? Well, you guys are the cause, so you tell me. I’m proud that people are protesting offensive terms in music. I hope they really shut down all this sick, derogatory language and mental images. Maybe then people can go back to writing about things that are more meaningful and stop writing about things that are shallower than a kiddie pool in August.
