Record Contracts

A contract (also known as a recording contract) is a legal agreement between labels and artists (or a group of artist), where the artist creates a musical recording (or a series of recordings) for the label to sell and promote. Artists under contract may not normally be saved to the label and can surely invite other artists as guest on their CDs, in a notice "courtesy of (name on the label)", and that the labeling can be used with a percentage of revenues. Labels usually holder of the copyright in the document their artists, and also the master copies of the documents. One exception is if you have a label for distribution to an artist, in this case, the artist, his manager, or other From May copyright holder (and teachers), while the folder is on the label for a period of time . The promotion is an essential factor for the success of a record, and has become a big part of the responsibility on the label, as well as the proper distribution of documents.

Although the initial treatment usually yields a relatively small percentage for  copyrights of artists, after (or new) treated, can do much more potential benefit or advantage. A few performers, like Madonna, Michael Jackson and U2, among others have deals worth several million dollars. Whitney Houston, for example, has the highest record in history for the payment of 100 million U.S. dollars for the recording of only five albums, not including fees.

For many other artists, there are plenty of other outlets exceeding last year sales figures or to follow. Registration of contracts in May opt-out on the label in the case of an artist by the popularity of sauces that do not affect the release albums or after the surgery, such as Mariah Carey $ 80 million panels, Virgin Records has been repealed by the Virgin Mary and they was canceled from the label after the album by the company sold poorly.

Unless otherwise formulated, prepaid or paid in advance is an artist on the label, if the sale of recordings or not. Capitol Records Linda Ronstadt informed the early 1970s, but still room for a portion of the Capitol to discuss their 1960 Capitol has cost more than what he has done. (The chain of visits in the mid-1970s, he could finally erase the debt.) Tags to expect a benefit, and little is an artist of the absence of the business or financial expert, as artists like George Michael has. "Walking out" in a very difficult situation agrees, as it is to try a new, without the realization of an old, records released by Donna Summer and the members of Boston (call themselves "The hunter Orion") withdraws from the distribution after his old label has a plea.
The Mamas and Papas, which were forced, in a meeting years after its dissolution in 1968, through the writing of his Dunhill Records, which is not yet completed (1971 people like us). Registration of enterprises in general, the increase in fees, or the artistic freedom for the actions of the signing of new contracts with them, and must usually the best treatment for an artist. Sometimes, however, the deeds will go where the opportunity to see better. Diana Ross, for example, in 1980 from her album "Diana", which fulfilled his contract with Motown Records. The album contains three Billboard pop hits, a # 1 and two dozen high. Ross, however, felt that it was never entirely by Motown for your work alone or in his work with The Supremes, one of the largest in history. When RCA Records offered him 20 million U.S. dollars for a contract with them to Motown Rossendorf has a chance, with the face, or at least something positive.

Motown, in the conviction, Ross solo career was at that time to up and down and sees no reason now to compensate for his work Supremes, offered 3 million U.S. dollars. Split with the decision to stay loyal to the label has its famous, but it is never well paid, or the signing of an agreement with another company to receive what they consider a value, which ultimately with the records RCA
