Born Sean Paul Henriques on January 8, 1973, Jamaican recording superstar Sean Paul was raised in the quiet island village of St. Andrew, Jamaica with his Chinese-Jamaican mother, a renowned painter, and his Portuguese father. He was a highly skilled athlete throughout his adolescent years, eventually earning a spot on the Jamaican national water polo team. Though his education and accreditations could have secured him a career in virtually any field he desired, Sean Paul’s true love was music.
Sean Paul began his music career by becoming a DJ, spinning mostly his own original dance recordings. He started scoring hit singles in Jamaica in 1996, and steadily thereafter began attracting global attention, which finally led to his big break into the pop mainstream in 2002 with his hit album Dutty Rock. Sean Paul released his debut single, Baby Girl, with producer Jeremy Harding. It proved a significant success, leading to further hits like Nah Get No Bly (One More Try), Deport Them, Excite Me, Infiltrate, and Hackle Mi.
In 1999, Sean Paul started to break through to the highly desirable American audiences. Paul scored a Top Ten hit on the Billboard rap charts with Hot Gal Today. In 2000, Sean Paul played the Summer Jam 2000 concert in New York City, the center of his American popularity. That fall, Paul released his first album on VP Records; the sprawling Stage One collected many of Paul's previous hit singles and compilation cuts, plus a few brand-new tracks.
2002's Dutty Rock and 2005's The Trinity were extremely successful. Both albums peaked in the Top Ten of the album chart and featured a handful of mainstream smashes. Sean Paul has also recorded hit singles with the likes of hit makers Beyonce, Rihanna, R. Kelly and Lil Jon.
Sean Paul’s accolades to date include one Grammy, one American Music Award, three Billboard Music Awards, and one Jamaican Music Award.
