After all this means more people being involved with music and more people learning an instrument from scratch. The violin is an incredible instrument, with a huge amount of repertoire that promises fun, entertainment and education.

But as a beginner what should you be looking for as you search for tips, guidance, techniques and tutorials?

Actually this is a bit of a difficult question to answer as every single player and student of the violin is completely individual and will need individual guidance. However there are a few things that any instrumentalist should look to learn about and improve upon as a beginner.

My first tip is to focus on music reading skills. Getting a good grasp of the treble clef is imperative for your violin studies. Being able to recognise the name of each note, it's time value and being able to find this on your instrument quickly is a core skill that is required. If you work in this you will be able to learn new repertoire more quickly and therefore gain more instrumental knowledge.

My next tip is to focus on your technique. Having a good posture, being able to hold the bow correctly, being able to position the violin correctly will enable you to play better instantly. You will be able to produce a much better tone, you will be able to play quicker, with more dynamic range and you'll be able to progress onto more and more difficult pieces.
