Most religions teach that everyone has a soul.. Even among the non-religious you would likely find a similar opinion. But if you ask someone what a soul actually is, you don't get a very good answer.
A soul is the energy embodiment of the experiences you have collectively lived through all your lives. Your soul is the larger part of your existence that is able to continue from life to life once the physical body dies. But in order to have a soul you must first build one.
Everything in the universe requires an exchange of energy. Nothing is freely given without cost. Fire requires wood, animals require food, trees require nutrients that are processed through photosynthesis. Looking at the cellular level we see that nutrients must be taken in and waste must be excreted. You want muscles? It is going to require effort. Want to make more money? Same thing. Effort. So why should the possession of a soul be any different? Why should we assume that it is free of any effort on our part?
A soul is created through reflecting on one's identity. By pondering your existence, by asking "Is this all that I am?" you start to draw together the energetic threads that build the soul. These threads are weak and need to be strengthened over time. This is not an overnight process. Years of effort are required to build a soul strong enough to exist beyond the death of the physical body.
If you never spend any time thinking about what you are and believe that your physical body is your entire existence, what will be left once your body dies? What will hold together your consciousness when your heart stops pumping and your electrical energy stops moving? It will simply collapse, like the memory in a computer when the power goes out. In order for consciousness to continue after death you have to have the ability to exist outside of your physical body independently.
Those who have not built a soul have their consciousness dissipate into the collective consciousness of the Earth or Gaia. The majority of people and animals become part of the collective like rain drops in a bucket. The wonderful thing is that anyone can build a soul, it simply requires the choice to put forth the effort. Whether or not you will move beyond this life to other worlds and other possibilities is completely up to you.
To learn about all aspects of the soul, I recommend the awesome 3 hour audio course, Cycles of the Soul. Every conceivable question is answered and at the end Eric leads you through a past life regression.
Dare to become something new.

I have tried desperately to bring people to awareness of this, but usually, I find anger or the usual religious, comforting answer of 'everyone has a soul, because God loves us all.'
So sad that so few take the time to truly reflect.

Solving the Problem of Evil
By: Brandon Songer | 17/08/2008 | MysticismPhilosophers and religious leaders have struggled for thousands of years to reconcile the existence of evil with the concept of a loving and merciful God. This problem has been a major problem for skeptics when people have tried to convince them of the existence of God. "If God exists, why is there evil? If God is all powerful, why doesn't he stop bad things from happening?" This question arises based on a problem of perception and another based on lack of expansive knowledge.
