As a spiritual-futurist, I have a BA degree majoring in history. One cannot know the future without knowing the past which holds clues to what is on the horizon. The world is in such a rapid expansion of knowledge that we are close to entering a tipping point that will forever change earth as we know it.
Those who believe in some of enhanced collective consciousness on the horizon are doing so primarily with what I call the "third eye". It's also called the sixth chakra by many. The point being that there is a third way through to the future other than from the past which others have described.
The sage has said that we can't know where we're going until we know from whence we have come.
There are two main views from the past that posit the path forward. The scientific materialists have us going through an impossible evolutionary chain (can you say Darwinism?) of events that has more holes than Obama has promises (and I'm not a Republican!). The mainline religious community has the world being formed and fashioned in six days with a birth date (according to Ussher) at 9am , October 23, 4004BCE.
For me both perspectives are wrong.
Both science and spirit communities are bringing forth a middle ground as we head to 12.21.2012 and I see such a date as an opportunity to seize the opportunity- carpe diem or more appropriately carpe manana. The past has been neither smooth sailing nor a short journey. This world is billions of years old and we have had several near mass extinctions along the way.
So, could we be looking at a sixth major extinction?
Sure, anything is possible and right now the way we are living and not living says we're headed in the wrong direction. The potentially good news though is that we get to CHOOSE. The future is in our hands. May we use better wisdom tomorrow than we have in the past.
