Attending Florida Traffic School

It doesn’t matter whether your vehicle was in motion or whether it was standing still, if you get collared for a traffic violation in Florida that could result in points being assessed to your driving record, your smartest move would be to enroll in a Florida traffic school class.

The only exceptions to this option for penance are those who hold a commercial class driver license or for those traffic violations that are considered “criminal”.

For pretty much everyone else, going to a Florida traffic school to have your record cleared, or in DMV-speak; your “adjudication withheld” can reap a slew of tangible rewards.

You will avoid those pesky points being assessed against your driver’s license, the fine that you have to pay to the courts may be cut by up to 18% and your insurance company can’t mess with your head when it’s time to renew or your wallet when it’s time to pay.

Of course, staying in the good graces of your insurance company would require that you do not get a second infraction within 18 months, or a third within 36 months.

Oh, and if you ever get a citation for exceeding the speed limit by more than 15 mph, all bets are off.

So you’ve decided to come clean and attend traffic school. You’ll be asked to sign an affidavit of your intentions to attend Florida traffic school, have it notarized and then return the document to the court clerk within 30 days.

The courts will then generously give you 60-90 days to participate in a state-approved Florida traffic school to set things straight.

And don’t think that at some point you can change your mind. Once you submit the affidavit to the court, you must participate in a Florida traffic school; no ifs, ands or buts.

Unless you don’t mind that your lack of follow-through will be regarded as a “guilty” plea.

Then you keep those dreaded points on your driving record, AND you will have to pay the amount they discounted off your bail because you said you were going to attend traffic school, AND they will tag on an additional $16.00 penalty just for kicks and giggles.

You are allowed to attend a Florida traffic school once in any 12 month period, and no more than 5 times in a 10 year period.

The procedures and the fees tend to vary some from court to court, so always make sure you get the skinny on your court’s requirements before you proceed to begin your adventure with a Florida traffic school.
