Florida Traffic School - What's the Point?

It's good to score points with your spouse by bringing home a surprise gift every now and then. It's really good to score points when you are on a sports team. It's really bad to score points on your Florida driving record because you don't want to go through the hassle of participating in a Florida traffic school program.

For most moving violations, if you drive 15 mph or less over the posted speed limit, if you get caught littering, or if you violate the child vehicle restraint laws, you are looking at adding 3 points to your driving record if you don't participate in a Florida traffic school program.

Depending on your insurance company, rates and driving record, that 3 point mark on your driving record will likely cause you to find that you are contributing a substantial sum towards your insurance agent’s kid's orthodontic bill next year.

If you drive more than 15 mph over the posted speed limit, illegally pass a stopped school bus or are involved in a non-speeding traffic violation that resulted in a crash, or you were driving recklessly and caused a collision, you can add a 4 point offense to your driving resume.

Sorry, but if you pull a 4-pointer, the option of Florida traffic school goes the way of Sandusky.

However, in order to earn 6 points on your driving record, the true scarlet letter of the Florida DMV, you have to be driving with such an substantial lead foot that you caused a crash.

Or you can do the unthinkable.

Leaving the scene of a crash where there has been damage will also result in 6 points of potential separation between you and your driver's license.

Retaining your ability to drive is based on the sum of your errors in Florida. If you accumulate 12 points in 12 months, your license will be suspended for 30 days. If you earn 18 points within 18 months, you will be taking the bus for 3 months. And if you manage to accrue 24 points within 36 months you better break out the Dr. Scholl's. You’re going to be walking for a year.

Or, you can stop worrying and do the only thing that you can do to be certain that those points can never be used against you on your driving record. You can participate in a Florida traffic school program.
