Car accident insurance is a common accessory that goes with your car nowadays. You buy automobile insurance for your own security or because you were compelled to do so by law. Almost all states in the US require their citizens to buy car insurance.
When you figured in an accident, remember to call your insurance representative right away. You can make your call while in the scene of the accident, unless you have more pressing matters to attend to, like serious injuries inflicted on other person or the other party.
While talking, just relate the facts as they were. Do not express your own opinion – any opinion. Do not admit anything as they can be used against you by your own insurance company. If your insurance agent poses some question, just answer them straight without revealing so much as to incriminate yourself.
Get as many as you can from the scene of the accident. Take pictures of damages in all angles that you can think of. Include the skid marks and other evidence proving the accident. Gather the names of witnesses who happen to saw the whole thing and jot down their names and contact numbers.
Also, record the insurance information of the other driver. Some states require that insurance papers be inside the car. Ask to see them from the other party for complete information. If he cannot produce them, exact so much information you need by asking. Do not forget to get his name and contact numbers as well.
If you have time and you are not too shattered or shocked, try to read and understand your insurance policy. This may come especially handy so you will be refreshed of what your policy provides for you.
Mind the time. The longer the time that lapsed after the accident, the harder it is to recover from your insurance company. Some policy provides time limits within only which you are allowed to recover your insurance. Claims beyond the time allowed in the policy can be invalidated.
If possible, remember everything you could about what was said in conversations with the investigator and the other party. You can write them later. It will help you recall facts when you need to re-tell them. Your notes can help you organize your answers so you don’t mix them up during investigation.
Gather and keep every receipts and bills you have incurred due to the accident. They may come especially helpful during recovery for the cost of the repair of the vehicle, medical and hospital expenses, treatment, etc.
Be honest and straightforward. Do not lie. Remember that you are dealing with experts who do it for a living. There is no sense telling lies – they can find out sooner or later. Lying can get your insurance claim denied due to fraudulent reasons. Remember that honesty is still the best policy. You can lie, but insurance claim is not the best place for it.
Do not just take the word of your insurance adjuster. Your insurer will try to lower your claim as much as it could to prevent greater liability. The last thing your insurance company wants is to give you more than what they’re willing. Like medical advice, seek a second opinion. In all likelihood, you will get higher assessment than what your adjuster tells you.
Consult your professional car accident lawyer when you are required to sign any document. Have your lawyer read the document first and ask if you can sign the same. Remember that insurance companies retain hordes of lawyers to avoid or limit financial liability, so be wise as well.
