FOSTER THE FORESTS
Forests are the assets of a nation.
They are the things of beauty and gifts of Nature.
Although, all of us have not visited forests, we know forests as large area of undulating land thickly covered with trees, bushes, grasses etc.
In addition, wild, non-domesticated animals, birds, insects, reptiles and a whole lot of living organisms are found in forests.
Forest officials - Foresters - highly qualified persons look after forests by protecting animals, planting new trees and guarding against fire.
We find forests in most of the mountains, hills and hillocks where all kinds of animals like elephant, lion, tiger, deer, rhinos, zebra, monkey, bison and a host of others live.
They live freely on foliage, flowers, fruits and small animals which are weak.
The strong animals like lion and tiger hunt animals like deer and satisfy their hunger.
Forests are their home, Nature provide them food, water, and shelter.
A fantastic free life they enjoy.
The growth of forests depend mainly on rainfall.
Based on their dependency, they are classified as tropical evergreen forest (more than 300 cm rainfall), semi-evergreen forest (200 cm rainfall), tropical deciduous forests (100 - 200 cm rainfall) thorn forests (less than 80 cm rainfall) tidal forests (along rivers) or mangroove forest (Sundarbans in Ganga delta).
Very valuable trees grow in these forests.
They were self grown ones.
Today people go and cut, transport, export or sell them in the local markets.
This is done with or without the permission from the Government.
Illeagal deforestation is going on for wealth, farming and human habitations.
Many forest products are collected by tribals who live in forests or adjacent to forests, are being sold in the markets as medcinal or health invigorators.
Some of these products are exported to other countries.
SInce these products are organically produced, no contamination with chemicals are expected.
Most of our Indian medicines of Siddha, Ayurveda and others are coming from forests.
The timber from teak, rose wood, sandal wood, ebony and many others are valuable wealth from forests.
Bamboo and rubber are two very useful plants fround in forest.
Realizing the importance of forests, Governments all over the world have established National Parks and Wild Life Sancturies to protect the biodiversity and forest ecology.
We can visit these parks and sancturies with permission from the concerned authorities.
There, strict rules we need to follow while visiting them.
In India, there are about 67 National Parks, 394 Wild Life Sancturies and 17 Tiger Reserves.
Kasiranga National Park of Assam, Gir National Park of Gujarat and Corbett National Park in Nainital are some important ones to name in India.
Natural calamities like drought, flood, fire affect forests significantly year after year.
But all these calamities are taken care by Nature itself.
It is here, the theory of survival for fittest works.
Protection of forest is the primary policy of every government.
In order to reduce the human intervention in natural forest, governments introduced the concept of social forests in waste lands for fuel wood, fodder and other medicinal produce.
Similarly, farm forestry or agroforestry was introduced to grow trees on private lands, farm boundaries and private plantations.
Forests are considered to be the great sink for carbon dioxide and they help in reducing carbon emission.
India has about 617.5 lakh hectares under forests which is 22.1 per cent of total geographical area.
It is the natural wealth India has got.
Therefore, the Government of India should have strong policies to foster this valuable wealth for future generations to come.
