Business networking is probably one of the most important, if not the most important, thing to do if a business is to be a success. Not networking means that a person is missing out on numerous opportunities to let others know that their business even exists. Of course, business networking has to be done right to get the most out of it. Here is a list of 25 tips to help get the most out of business networking.
- Create yourself some business cards and make sure to keep them handy at all times.
- Putting together a brief, easy to read resume can be helpful. Being able to see your experience and abilities can help bring in more clients.
- Get involved with volunteer positions in organizations or associations. This will get your face out there as well as let others learn what your business has to offer.
- Offer help when possible. This can build a stronger relationship and may earn you a referral later on.
- Keep in touch with those in your network. Not keeping in touch might mean that you get cleaned off their list if they don’t feel there’s a reason to keep you around. Keeping in touch is easy. It can be as simple as sending some articles, tips and useful information that might be of interest to them.
- Ask for help. It could help to build a stronger relationship and it will help to keep you in mind if they need something later on.
- Keep the relationship with business contacts on a professional level.
- Follow through on what you say.
- Keep in mind that networking is two-way, meaning that there is a certain give in take when maintaining long-term contacts.
- If someone messages you for help or asks a question, try to be prompt with your reply. If someone has helped you, let them know you appreciate it.
- Maintain a positive attitude.
- Keep business contacts organized. This can help you to familiarize yourself with who they are and what kind of business they are involved in, so that there is no embarrassing mix up or confusion later on.
- Be clear in what it is that you are looking for.
- Always be respectful to those in your network.
- Be honest.
- Get together for face to face meetings or gatherings when possible. Have lunch, or host a social gathering; this can help to build and maintain business relationships.
- Never be pushy with business contacts.
- Keep humour and conversation on a professional level.
- When designing a business network profile, make sure it is easy to read and understand.
- Follow up on contacts.
- Treat everyone as your equal; never talk down to them.
- Be open-minded.
- Set realistic goals.
- Always make eye-contact and smile.
- Make it clear how you can help them, and let them know what you need.
